AFLW 2019: Lightning strikes twice as wild weather steals spotlight from Kangaroos’ win

So apparently lightning does strike twice.
Almost a year to the day after the Giants’ Round Two match against Carlton was halted for 30 minutes after quarter-time because of epic storms, history repeated.

Friday night’s match between GWS and North Melbourne faced a 43-minute delay before there was a total blackout towards the end of the second quarter.

With four minutes and 27 seconds remaining on the clock, Drummoyne Oval was drowned in darkness.

There were fears the AFL would call off the match — a move that could only be enforced by AFL operations manager Steve Hocking.

If Hocking called off the match before halftime, the match could have been rescheduled or the two clubs could have split the four points.

GWS was reportedly keen to do just that, although later denied that sentiment. The Kangaroos, who are in the opposite conference, were determined to bank the four points.

Which they did.

North Melbourne mastered the tricky conditions, recording its second win of the season as it defeated GWS by 25 points.

But it wasn’t all good news for the Kangaroos.

Ashley Riddell was assisted from the ground in the third term in serious pain with a suspected ankle injury.

And the Giants also had their injury concerns, with Emma Swanson hurting her shoulder after she collided with the goalpost in the opening minutes of the match.

But Alan McConnell’s biggest worry will be his side’s 0-2 start to the season.

History would suggest the likelihood of GWS making the finals from that position is minute — even more so with the conference system.

The Kangaroos, conversely, showed just why so many consider Scott Gowans’ team the benchmark of the competition.

Some teams struggle to kick seven goals in the best of conditions.

North did it amid lightning, thunder and blackouts.
