Flag frontrunners West Coast and Geelong primed for finals preview

Western Bulldogs great Brad Johnson has labelled today’s clash between Geelong and West Coast a potential forerunner to another showdown in September.

The Eagles and Cats, adversaries in the 1992 and 1994 grand finals, have met just once in a final since then.

Johnson, who will be part of Fox Footy’s commentary team at GMHBA Stadium, said the Eagles’ shock Good Friday capitulation to Port Adelaide had not shaken his faith in the reigning premiers.

The 364-game legend expected both West Coast and Geelong to be competing for the flag at the pointy end of the season.

“I think so, and I think that’s what the competition sees, no question,” Johnson said.

“It’s going to be a high-class, quality game of footy. West Coast obviously coming off last week and wanting to respond after Port Adelaide took control of them.

“The Cats losing to GWS at home (in round four) – they don’t want to lose two in a row at the Cattery.

“It’s going to be a great battle for the West Coast forwards versus Geelong’s backs, who are known as the misfits and they’re getting the job done at the moment.”

Geelong tightened to $1.36 favourites yesterday, with West Coast drifting to $3.10 outsiders with TABtouch. The teams are second and third in flag betting behind premiership favourite Collingwood.

The Eagles rank last in the AFL for contested possession and inside 50s this season. Johnson, who tipped the Cats to win a close contest, expected the Eagles’ midfielders to hit back hard after lowering their colours against the Power.

“They’ve got class in the midfield and these guys are big-game, proud performers. So if they’re quiet one week, then the mental resolve would be to stand out the following week and have a real drive,” Johnson said.

“So I’m sure West Coast will have that with their mids.”

Dom Sheed, whose output has decreased since stints in the forward-line arising due to Andrew Gaff’s return from suspension, is set to play more midfield minutes given the loss of Jack Redden to injury.

Exciting 195cm youngster Jarrod Brander, West Coast’s top pick in the 2017 national draft, has been recalled for his third game and is set to be unleashed on a wing at times after impressing in the WAFL.

Johnson said Brownlow medallist Patrick Dangerfield was the man Eagles tagger Mark Hutchings should start on.

“The most important player in terms of Geelong’s midfield I still think is Paddy Dangerfield,” he said.

“Whether you can actually stop him and restrict his influence is the biggest challenge for any opposition team.

“Because if he’s quieter in the midfield he can go forward and play that role, especially if the midfield tagger goes with him for a period of time.”

Match preview: Carlton vs Hawthorn

Where and when: University of Tasmania Stadium, Sunday April 28, 3.20pm AEST

Last time they met: Etihad Stadium, round 18, 2018: Carlton 7.10 (52) lost to Hawthorn 18.16 (124)

The Hawks held the Blues to just one goal in the first half on their way to a thumping 72-point win late in the season. Tom Mitchell was the standout with 46 disposals and two goals, while smalls Luke Bruest and Paul Puopolo combined for nine majors between them.

What it means for Hawthorn: On paper, this should be routine for the Hawks. But their indifferent form means nothing can be ruled out down in Tasmania. Victory on Sunday should be a settler in an unpredictable season.

What it means for Carlton: After its first victory of the season last week, Carlton will hope to replicate what St Kilda has done this year and build upon that confidence. Victory here could get the Blues on a roll.

How Hawthorn wins: By exploiting Carlton's mid-sized defenders. If players such as Breust and Puopolo can find form, as they did last season, it could spell trouble for the Blues.

How Carlton wins: By doing exactly what it did against the Dogs. Win the ball out of the midfield, control the tempo of the game and let its key forwards get to work inside 50.

The stat: Hawthorn has won 15 of its last 16 encounters against Carlton. Remarkably, seven of those have been won by more than 50 points and two have been won by triple-digit margins.

The match-up: Jaeger O'Meara v Patrick Cripps

Cripps is the game's best inside midfielder at the moment, with Carlton's onball brigade delivering in its first victory of the season last week. Hawthorn's midfield has had its issues this season, so O'Meara will prove key to thwarting the Blues' work out of the centre.

It's a big week for: Harry McKay

McKay continues to lead the League for contested marks, but he must find consistency in front of goal. After his bag of four majors against the Dogs last week lifted the Blues to victory, he'll be hoping for another haul against the Hawks on Sunday.

Big call: Breust tears Blues backline to shreds in Tassie triumph

Prediction: Hawthorn by 21 points

Match preview: North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide

Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Friday, April 26, 7.20pm (ACST)

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round six, 2018. Port Adelaide 15.12 (102) defeated North Melbourne 10.9 (69).

Small forward Sam Gray booted four goals and key defender Tom Jonas did a great defensive job on Ben Brown as the Power beat the Kangaroos by 33 points. Wingman Jared Polec (now with North) was influential for the Power, with a game-high 34 disposals and 12 tackles.

What it means for Port Adelaide: The Power can build on their sensational win against reigning premiers West Coast in Perth on Good Friday. With a 4-2 start, the Power would be set up nicely for the season.

What it means for North Melbourne: The Kangaroos will be desperate to get off the bottom of the ladder. It's been a shocking start to the season, hitting a new low with last weekend's 58-point loss to Essendon.

How Port Adelaide wins: The Power's gameplan is built around frenetic ball movement, taking the game on and playing high-risk, high-reward football. It doesn't come off all the time, but when it does, it's hard to stop.

How North Melbourne wins: It's all about contested ball for the Kangaroos. Their midfielders have to establish themselves on the inside and give their outside runners like Polec and Aaron Hall a chance to hit up their forwards on the lead.

The stat: The Power have won their past four games against the Kangaroos by an average margin of 34 points. North Melbourne's last win over Port Adelaide was in round three, 2014.

The match-up: Tom Jonas v Ben Brown

Jonas did an outstanding job on Brown in the corresponding fixture last year. Brown kicked four goals, but two of those came when the sting was out of the game. Brown is the eighth-ranked key forward in the Official AFL Player Ratings, and 98th overall, up against Jonas, who is the 14th-ranked small/medium defender, and 133th overall.

It’s a big week for: Jared Polec

The Kangaroos wingman faced the Power in the JLT Community Series, but there will still be plenty of feeling in his first home and away game against his former club. Polec,  who joined the Kangaroos on a lucrative five-year deal, has been one of their shining lights in a tough start to the season.

Big call: Robbie Gray kicks five goals and has 20 disposals in a best-on-ground performance.

Prediction: Port Adelaide by 32 points

Match preview: Richmond v Melbourne

Where and when: MCG, Wednesday April 24, 7.35pm

Last time they met: MCG, round five, 2018: Melbourne 8.8 (56) lost to Richmond 15.12 (102)

The final margin hides the fact this was a hotly contested, physical game. Richmond, boosted by an even contribution across the park, wore down the Demons to blow out the difference from 19 points at three-quarter time to 46 by the final siren.

What it means for Richmond: The continued righting of the ship. After a disastrous opening few rounds with two 40-plus-point losses and injury to star players, the Tigers sit at 3-2 coming into this match.

What it means for Melbourne: Salvaging of pride. Last weekend was a horror show for Melbourne, comprehensively outplayed by an improving St Kilda. In an even season, every win counts, but one over Richmond would be a confidence boost.

How Richmond wins: Speed. Fortunately for the Tigers, they have it in spades. Melbourne were slow and beaten on the outside last week and Richmond is in a good position to exploit it again.

How Melbourne wins: Clearances have been Richmond's Achilles heel the past few years, and Melbourne has some of the stronger inside midfielders in the competition. Using Max Gawn's ruck work to advantage is vital.

The stat: Richmond superstar Dustin Martin regained some form last week against Sydney but playing Melbourne has often been an issue for the midfielder. Martin averages 22 disposals against the Dees, which most players would be pleased with, but it's his second-lowest return.

The match-up: Tom Lynch v Sam Frost

With Oscar McDonald out of favour, Melbourne's one recognised key back is Frost (229th overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings). He will be up against Tom Lynch (207th), who was goalless last week, but kicked 16 in the first four rounds.

It's a big week for: Tom McDonald

It's been a horrible start for the Melbourne key forward. He hasn't been helped by poor delivery inside 50, but McDonald has only kicked two goals this year. Was moved onto the wing against St Kilda in a bid to get him involved.

Big call: Jack Riewoldt will return with a bang after missing three games with a wrist injury and kick four goals.

Prediction: Tigers by 27 points

Port Adelaide drops Steven Motlop for its clash with West Coast in Perth

Port Adelaide has dropped Steven Motlop for its clash with West Coast on Friday.
Motlop had just seven disposals against Richmond, while he only had 14 the week before — and failed to kick a goal in either game.

Power coach Ken Hinkley confirmed Motlop would not make the trip to Perth, with the forward/midfielder to play in the SANFL on Thursday night instead.

“His form for the first three or four weeks of the season has been a little bit off by his own admission,” Hinkley told Port Adelaide’s website.

“He hasn’t been able to find the football and impact as well as we’d like.

“On that basis, we’ve made the decision to play him at SANFL level, where he’ll hopefully find some more of the ball.

“We know Steven is a high-quality player who we’re sure will make his way back and be a significant part of the team going forward.”

Motlop joined Port Adelaide from Geelong at the end of the 2017 season.

The 28-year-old has played 25 games for the Power after playing 135 for the Cats between 2010 and 2017.

The Power confirmed Karl Amon would return from a knee injury via the SANFL.

Amon suffered a medial strain in Round 1 and has not featured since.

“Karl will also play in the Magpies tomorrow night and we’re pleased that’s the case,” Hinkley said.

“It’s a great credit to him for his diligence in getting right and for being ready to go.

“Karl certainly adds to our squad, and to our AFL team when he’s fit and firing.”

North Melbourne v Essendon

Marvel Stadium

Form
North Melbourne (1-3) v Essendon (2-2)
After slow starts for both sides in 2019, it seems North Melbourne and Essendon have found their respective rhythms after the opening four rounds.

North recorded its first win of the season last Saturday night, defeating the Crows by 12 points, although the margin could well have been greater if it wasn’t for some inaccurate kicking.

As for Essendon, losses in Rounds 1 and 2 have been balanced out by back-to-back wins over the past fortnight, defeating Melbourne and Brisbane by 18 and 47 points respectively.

Last time we met
Being traditional rivals means that contests between the Roos and Bombers are often fiery and exciting, and the last time these two sides met was no different.

Essendon claimed the four points in a shootout at Marvel Stadium, outscoring North 125 to 108 in one of 2018’s most memorable matches.

The Bombers’ midfielders ran wild, with captain Dyson Heppell and Zach Merrett both recording in excess of 30 disposals and combining for 11 tackles.

Up forward, Shaun McKernan and Orazio Fantasia were efficient, slotting four goals each and limiting their behinds to just one between them.

For North, Shaun Higgins was at his best again, collecting 31 disposals and proving to be a handful offensively, recording 7 inside 50’s.

Mason Wood was a presence up forward, kicking 3.3, while Ben Cunnington, Luke McDonald and Ben Brown all featured with two of their own.

Key matchup
Ben Brown v Cale Hooker
Against the Crows, it was a three-goal third term from Ben Brown which catapulted the Roos back into the contest, and ultimately the lead.

Having kicked 12 goals to date, Brown has still managed to find the goals without hitting the form that saw him be a contender for the Coleman medal in the past two seasons.

Mason Wood’s inclusion resulted in a much more balanced forward-line, which in turn, has looks to have helped Brown.

Essendon defender Cale Hooker was tasked with Brown the last time these two sides met, and Friday will likely be no different.

Hooker returned to the side last weekend against the Lions, having missed the opening three rounds with a calf injury.

He took little time settling into the season, collecting 23 disposals and taking 13 marks and playing a solid defensive role on Brisbane’s forwards.

The 30-year-old’s return sees the reunion of he and Hurley, who have formed a stingy partnership over the years.

It’s won and lost in…
….North’s backline
While Essendon’s tall forwards haven’t been overly dominant in the opening month of the season, it’s been its smalls who have done the damage on the scoreboard.

Led by Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, the Bombers’ talented mosquito fleet has caused headaches for opponents, and this weekend will likely be no different.

McDonald-Tipungwuti has starred in 2019, kicking 11 goals for the season, including a bag of 7 last weekend at the MCG.

Jake Stringer has also chimed in with some goals of his own, having kicked 7 in his four appearances.

North’s backline will no doubt have its hands full on Friday, particularly without Luke McDonald, whose suspension was upheld earlier this week.

McDonald joins Marley Williams as sidelined defenders, leaving the likes of Jamie Macmillan, Jasper Pittard, Sam Wright and Shaun Atley to look after McDonald-Tipungwuti and Stringer.

Pittard has been in impressive form since arriving from Port Adelaide late last year, and Shaun Atley has been a prominent feature since making the move to defence.

Keep an eye on…
...Darcy Parish and Jy Simpkin
Having missed Round 1 through form, Darcy Parish has made his way back into Essendon’s senior side and has been a solid contributor.

The high half-forward isn’t a large accumulator, but is efficient will ball in hand and can be an offensive threat.

Averaging 20 disposals per game, Parish ranks number 1 amongst his side for goal assists, and sixth in the competition, averaging 1.67 per game,

Fellow 21-year-old Jy Simpkin comes into the clash off the back of his best performance of the season, collecting 19 disposals and playing a strong role for North.

Drifting between the forward-line and the midfield, Simpkin’s trademark explosiveness and evasiveness was on show, impacting the game both on the inside and outside of the contest.

While it’s unlikely they’ll go head-to-head, both will play similar roles for their side.

Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood Magpies: AFL Thursday night forecast

Thursday night football makes its way to The Gabba for a highly anticipated clash between the Lions and Magpies.
Not since Nathan Buckley and Michael Voss were running around on the MCG has a match between these two clubs been so anticipated, with what was once a great rivalry dissipating massively over the last decade and a half.

But 2019 is easily the biggest chance for this once-bitter feud to be reignited. With a reportedly sold-out Gabba ready to rock, we could be witnessing the rebirth of something special.

In what’s been a season of unprecedented unpredictability, it’s easy to forget just how stunning Brisbane were in Round 1 with their clinical dismantling of the reigning premiers.

That 44-point demolition of the Eagles wasn’t a mere flash in the pan, with Chris Fagan’s side going on to admirably come from behind against North Melbourne before grinding out another hard-fought win against Port Adelaide a week later.

Last week saw the club fall back to earth a little, however. How they’ll respond to that 47-point crushing by Essendon will be a huge indication as to what 2019 truly holds.

Collingwood started off their quest to go one better with a heartbreaking seven-point loss to the Cats, but have shown glimpses of competition-best both in that loss and in the weeks since.

A Round 2 shellacking of Richmond showed last year’s preliminary final upset was no fluke, although the last fortnight hasn’t been as kind. The Eagles comfortably accounted for them at the MCG once more in Round 3, before they were made to fight very hard to shake off the Bulldogs last week.

With their first interstate trip of the season looming, it seems we’re about to get a real glimpse at just what the Pies are made of.

Teams
Brisbane Lions
B: Luke Hodge, Harris Andrews, Daniel Rich
HB: Alex Witherden, Darcy Gardiner, Mitch Robinson
C: Jarrod Berry, Lachie Neale, Hugh McCluggage
HF: Cam Rayner, Eric Hipwood, Lincoln McCarthy
F: Charles Cameron, Daniel McStay, Oscar McInerney
FOL: Stefan Martin, Dayne Zorko, Jarryd Lyons
I/C: Allen Christensen, Josh Walker, Nick Robertson, Rhys Mathieson
EMG: Ben Keays, Connor Ballenden, Noah Answerth, Archie Smith

Chris Fagan has to be applauded here for keeping the 22 intact despite last weekend’s poor showing. The last thing a young team finding themselves in newfound good form needs is the axe to start swinging after one bad week.

The coach would’ve no doubt addressed the group as to what he expects tonight, but the knowledge that it’s a leash around their necks – not a noose – is key to ensuring his players play with confidence and keep taking the game on.

Collingwood
B: Jeremy Howe, Jordan Roughead, Brayden Maynard
HB: James Aish, Darcy Moore, Jack Crisp
C: Tom Phillips, Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom
HF: Jamie Elliott, Mason Cox, Josh Thomas
F: Jordan de Goey, Brody Mihocek, Travis Varcoe
FOL: Brodie Grundy, Taylor Adams, Dayne Beams
I/C: Jaidyn Stephenson, Adam Treloar, Tom Langdon, Callum Brown
EMG: Levi Greenwood, Flynn Appleby, Rupert Wills, Ben Crocker

Just the one change for Collingwood and it’s a forced one, with Chris Mayne set for a moderate sideline stint after suffering a back injury.

Ex-Lion Dayne Beams is the big inclusion, however, with his class through the middle key to combating a Brisbane engine room that’s been clicking.

Despite being healthy, Nathan Buckley has elected not to recall tagger Levi Greenwood, trusting his mids to win enough of their own ball for Lachie Neale and Dayne Zorko not be a problem.

Three burning questions
Will last week’s crushing loss derail the young Lions?
The nature of young sides is that momentum can be both built and squandered very easily.

When they’re up and about, their irresistible confidence often sees the team become far more than the sum of their parts. But all it can take is for one big disappointment to put enough of the team back in their shells.

Last week’s massive loss has the potential to do just that.

Of Brisbane’s three triumphs this season, I was most impressed with the comeback over North Melbourne. Seeing a team like this change the quality of their play so fundamentally within a match itself is a huge sign of maturity.

They’ll need to call on that maturity and discover that confidence again tonight – especially if the Pies kick the first couple.

What reception will Dayne Beams receive?
Dayne Beams joins a very short list of modern players to leave a club via trade, only to return a few years later. The premiership midfielder gave football fans a new insight into the mind of a wantaway footballer when he bravely requested a trade to Brisbane to be with his terminally ill father.

After some strong, albeit injury-riddled, years at the Lions, ever-growing speculation that Beams would seek a return to Victoria were seemingly quashed when the ex-captain made a passionate announcement that he’d see out his contract.

But, as almost always happens, that statement rang hollow and the 29-year-old found himself back in black and white. Will Lions fans give their ex-skipper a warm welcome ‘home’? Or will the boo birds descend on The Gabba in force?

Can the Magpies stay in top gear?
Collingwood’s best performance this year has easily been their Round 2 demolition of the Tigers. If they play at that level, they’re virtually impossible to beat.

The problem has been reaching that level on a consistent basis.

Their second-best effort so far has arguably been the Round 1 loss to Geelong, with last week’s win over the Bulldogs somewhat unconvincing after they were swept aside by the Eagles the previous week.

It’s still early days – and you’d suspect Nathan Buckley’s charges won’t have it all their own way tonight – but hitting that top level over the course of successive weeks has to be the goal over the next two months.

Quick stats
Collingwood have won their last five matches against Brisbane and 10 of the past 12, including their past five at The Gabba.
Brisbane’s last win over the Pies at home came way back in 2010, with Brendan Fevola and Jonathan Brown kicking four goals each.
Prior to Collingwood’s current hot streak, the Lions dominated this rivalry. They won 13 of the first 15 clashes between the sides, including the 2002 and 2003 grand finals.
Last time these teams played, Taylor Adams dominated with 33 disposals, 16 contested possessions, eight clearances and five inside 50s.
The biggest crowd between these two clubs at The Gabba is 37,224 (Round 15, 2005).

Prediction
Despite last week’s rough loss to Essendon, I think Brisbane are the real deal in 2019. They’re scoring well, have a good mix of veterans and young talent blooming into the prime of their careers.

But Collingwood are a different beast. As stunning as their surge to contention was a year ago, they’re clearly a genuine premiership contender again this season.

The young Lions will give their opponents an almighty fight, but the bigger, more experienced bodies of the Pies should see them escape from The Gabba with the four points.

Magpies by 8 points

Match preview: St Kilda v Hawthorn

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said afterwards the better side lost, going goaless in the final term but managing to hold on. Star midfielder Jaeger O'Meara was excellent for the brown and gold and Jack Gunston booted four goals, as Jack Lonie did for the Saints.

What it means for St Kilda: There's a wave of positivity coming from Moorabbin, having started 2-1 in a season many predicted to be full of doom and gloom. The Saints will be desperate to keep the momentum going.

What it means for Hawthorn: No team makes finals based on their April form, but they can rule themselves out with a poor start to the season. The Hawks seemed destined for a tough stretch when Shaun Burgoyne and Liam Shiels went out with hamstring injuries but could improve to 2-0 without the duo.

How St Kilda wins: Alan Richardson's side has been setting up well defensively, keeping them in the contest despite having plenty of talent on the sidelines. It needs to do so again.

How Hawthorn wins: The Chad Wingard show just warmed up last week, with the Hawk working his way into the game and finishing with three goals. He'll want to produce some magic against the Saints.

The stat: Having picked up 30 disposals per match in 2017-18, Seb Ross has been a touch quieter so far this year, averaging 24.

The match-up: Ben McEvoy v Rowan Marshall

Both ruckmen impressed last week but are at different ends of the Player Ratings. McEvoy is No.15 while Marshall is No.463, having lined up in just 15 career games.

It's a big week for: Jaeger O'Meara (Hawthorn)

The star midfielder has been going very well despite not having much support around him. He'll need to produce again, which will be made harder when Saints stopper Jack Steele inevitably goes to him.

Big call: There will be nine lead changes before the Saints kick away late.

Prediction: St Kilda by 14 points.

Preview: Blues v Suns

CARLTON will take on the in-form Suns away from home this Sunday for its Round 4 clash at Metricon Stadium.

The Blues are determined to get four points on the board after a string of frustrating close losses. Despite showing signs of promise, Carlton has so far been unable to get the job done.

Despite a strong record against Gold Coast, it will be no easy feat knocking off the confident Suns after two consecutive wins.

THE GAME IN FOCUS:

It has been a frustrating start to the season for the Blues, with their last two matches lost within 20-point margins.

Carlton again showed promise in Round 3, but made themselves pay with a second-quarter concentration lapse that Sydney quickly capitalised on.

Sam Walsh impressed for another week, notching up 28 disposals and kicking his first AFL goal to keep the Blues in contention and show fans he’s a player for the future.

The Suns will take a new-found confidence into the weekend’s match, having recorded another narrow win over the Bulldogs away from home.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET:
Carlton’s record against Gold Coast should give fans confidence heading into the weekend’s match, with the Blues winning six out of the 10 games between the two sides.

Carlton notched its second consecutive win at Metricon Stadium the last time these two teams met in Round 19 last year.

It was a low-scoring affair with the Suns hitting the front early, but the Blues came out strong after half-time to bury Gold Coast by 35 points.

Patrick Cripps had a day out in the sunshine state, finishing the day on 37 disposals, 11 tackles and a goal on the way to a three-vote performance.

Reliable as always, Kade Simpson was instrumental in shutting down the Suns’ attack to keep them to just two goals after the first quarter.

BLUE FOCUS:
Dependable ruckman Matthew Lobbe will run out in the Navy Blue for his 100th game on Sunday.

Lobbe has been a key ally to big men Matthew Kreuzer and Andrew Phillips since making the move from Port Adelaide in 2017.

In a round of milestones, Sunday also marks the 50th AFL game for star forward Charlie Curnow and the 50th game in Navy Blue for defender Liam Jones.

GET EXCITED ABOUT:
Fans will be pleased to see the return Charlie Curnow to the side after missing the last round with bone bruising to his knee.

The Blues have struggled over the opening rounds to convert inside 50s into scoring opportunities, so they’ll be hoping the dynamic Curnow is back at his best.

But with the Suns defence at its finest with the second highest rebound 50 count in the competition, it will be no easy feat for the returning star.

BLUE VIEW:
Gold Coast has arrived in 2019 and are not to be underestimated by the Blues.

Despite Carlton’s favourable record against them, the Suns are looking a more and more dangerous proposition by the week with a talented young list.

The Blues are edging closer to a win, but will need to maintain their pressure over the four quarters for the first time this season to get on the board.

Circling the wagons at Melbourne

There’s a secret football society in Melbourne. On various bayside football ovals (they move around to avoid detection) an eclectic bunch get together a couple of times a week to do circle work. The ancient tradition of spreading out the players on the field and getting a ball to circumnavigate the field in a rhythmic motion of kicks marks and handballs.

This is a group activity based on freedom and abandon, but they are all slaves to one thing. The ball must keep moving. Around and around and around it goes. Etiquette prevails over hard and fast rules, but there’s no tackling.

This is amateurish football circle work, gloriously amateurish. These football crop circles have been spinning for years and there’s no sign of it slowing down, at least that’s what I’m told. I’m an outsider, you see. I got close a couple of times, even had a kick with them once, but I am essentially outside this circle. For now.

We are obsessed with circles in football. In the good times we seek out these circles, in the bad times we do the same and in those moments of doubt, when we’re not sure how things are going to go, we hold onto each other and form circles instinctively. Maybe it's a pack animal thing. Footy players are the ultimate pack animal.

Before every game this year and for the rest of the year the two opposing sides out in the middle of the ground will come together one last time before facing and they will rally around the drum, so to speak. These circles, in my experience, spit and fizz with doubt, excitement, brotherhood, expectation and adrenaline. Twenty-two red-blooded men with complex inner workings nod their heads along with the captain's sermon. What will happen next? What circle might await us after the battle has been won or lost?

We got a brief glimpse into the troubles at Melbourne this week when we found out that the players had lifted out the cheap plastic chairs to form the worst circle of them all. The "we’re in a whole lot of trouble" circle. Home truths, brutal honesty, tender confessions and promises of redemption are usually the order of the day.

As dire as it all sounds, these times in a football club can also be perversely inspiring and spark a relaunched assault on the league, but it's a big card for a playing group to play at round three. It's tantalising to ponder about who spoke up and put their reputation on the block and who sat back.

This kind of ritual is like a reduction of human chemistry. Your team at it’s most basic, raw place. Remove every distraction and outside noise and quite literally circle the wagons of your footy team.

Whether it’s confrontational or confessional, the hope is that everyone recommits to the cause. This is high-risk poker for the Demons this week. It will be an uncomfortable build-up for the players, but the reward can be season-defining and we know how devastating their football can be when it clicks for them.

Best guess is that 10 teams circled up this week. The nine winners and the Demons. From the nine winners my attention was drawn to Gold Coast. Despite beating my old mob, the Bulldogs, I couldn't help but admire the Suns. I guess it's the underdog thing. I wonder how many times they have circled up the plastic chairs over the past nine season.

If the losing-streak circle is full of jumbled, anxious thoughts and excruciating silence, its counterpart, the victory song sung arm in arm, is its polar opposite. These brief minutes in a footballer's life are a meditation. No conflicting thoughts, just the mantra of joy and camaraderie to the tune of your club's old ditty. You’re feeling, not thinking, and that’s when the pack is happiest.

Circles within circles, like the inside of a fallen tree. Rings of time. The Blues were one of the other eight teams who probably didn't circle up. Arguably, they’ve started OK. Low expectations and three honourable losses in a row, but they might be left with the most uncomfortable question of all: will we ever circle up again? When can win we sing our damn song and feel its goodness?

We’re a long way from home. The premiership race is still wide open. But let's not forget that after that final siren has been sounded a group of players, the strongest pack, having already sung their song and showered up, will walk out into the darkness of the MCG. They will walk out into the centre of the ground, place the cup in the middle of the centre circle, form their own circle around it and sing their victory war cry. The song will reverberate around and around and around ...

And We Are Ready To Share With You The Ways To Live Streaming West Coast Eagles vs Collingwood Magpies AFL Game.

Match preview: Collingwood v West Coast

Where and when: MCG, Saturday, April 6, 7.25pm AEDT

Last time they met: MCG, Grand Final, 2018: West Coast 11.13 (79) defeated Collingwood 11.8 (74)

In an epic, seesawing decider, the Magpies kicked the first five goals before the Eagles slowly clawed their way back and ultimately claimed their fourth premiership after Dom Sheed slotted one the great Grand Final goals. Teammate Luke Shuey was awarded the Norm Smith Medal.

What it means for Collingwood: If a comprehensive win over Richmond last week didn't already show the Pies will again be a formidable opponent this season, a victory over the reigning premier will absolutely confirm it.

What it means for West Coast: Knocking off the hot Pies at the MCG for the third time in succession would not only establish a psychological advantage but dispel any concerns about a premiership hangover.

How Collingwood wins: The Pies are a more rounded side since they played in the Grand Final with Darcy Moore and Jordan Roughead capable of handling the Eagles' tall forwards, while the inclusion of Dayne Beams and the Eagles' loss of ruckman Scott Lycett could swing the midfield battle.

How West Coast wins: Premiership heroes Shuey and Sheed have continued to build momentum and at the very least should ensure the Pies' runners are made accountable, while the development of Oscar Allen has added another prong to the Eagles' attack.

The stat: The Eagles have won their past three games against Collingwood, two of them at the MCG after giving up considerable starts.

The match-up: Jack Darling v Darcy Moore

Darling (ranked No. 106 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) bagged a game-high four goals in the big win over Greater Western Sydney last round and is likely to be opposed by a primed Moore (No. 330), who has been a superb addition to a previously undersized defence.

It’s a big week for: Brody Mihocek

The Magpies key forward will have his hands full combatting brilliant Eagles defender Jeremy McGovern, a rebounding specialist who zones off to intercept or mark as the third man in. Mihocek was in good form in the win over Richmond and will need to make McGovern accountable and not allow him to mark at will.

Big call: The three most influential players will be Pies who didn't play in last year's Grand Final: Darcy Moore, Dayne Beams and Jamie Elliott.

Prediction: Magpies by five points

Match preview: Brisbane v Port Adelaide

Where and when: Gabba, Saturday, April 6, 6.25pm AEST

Last time they met: Adelaide Oval, round three, 2018: Port Adelaide 14.13 (97) defeated Brisbane 14.8 (92)

Port almost blew an 18-point three-quarter time lead but held on against a gallant Brisbane. Allen Christensen's snap at goal with just over a minute remaining was marked on the goal line by Jared Polec to save the day. Stefan Martin was easily the best player afield.

What it means for Brisbane: A chance to start three-from-three for the first time since 2010. After beating the premier in round one, another win would really start dragging the casual sporting fans in Brisbane back to the Gabba.

What it means for Port Adelaide: Written off by many as a genuine finals contenders prior to the season, a win over red-hot Brisbane would frank Ken Hinkley's men as a team to watch.

How Brisbane wins: By staying composed. The midfield has shown it can win enough footy, and if they use it well – which has been problematic at times in the first fortnight – the forward line is potent enough to kick a winning score.

How Port Adelaide wins: Aside from nullifying the Lions at the centre bounce, Port must pressure Brisbane manically when defending. The Lions love to play with pace but are prone to turning the ball over. Port should also not be afraid to possess the ball and slow the game down.

The stat: Port Adelaide have owned the ball in their first two victories, averaging an AFL-best 433 disposals a match. Both times Port has had 93 more possessions than its opponent. They also lead the League for marks inside 50 (14).

The match-up: Stefan Martin v Scott Lycett

It's quickly becoming apparent the influence a good ruckman on the result with the new 6-6-6 rules at centre bounces. Martin (ranked sixth among ruckmen in the Official AFL Player Ratings) was a huge influence last week, while Scott Lycett (up 55 places to 231st overall) is already looming as one of the most astute off-season acquisitions after a terrific opening two weeks.

It's a big week for: Tom Rockliff

Yes, the former Brisbane skipper played the Lions last year, but this will be his first trip to the Gabba since leaving via free agency at the end of 2017. Rockliff played 154 matches for the Lions, won two best and fairests and was named an All Australian in 2014. If he becomes influential, watch for Mitch Robinson to start following him around.

Big call: Eric Hipwood to break free from his slow start with five goals.

Prediction: Lions by 19 points

And We Are Ready To Share With You The Ways To Live Streaming Essendon Bombers vs Melbourne Demons AFL Game.

Match preview: Melbourne v Essendon

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round six, 2018: Essendon 10.12 (72) lost to Melbourne 16.12 (108)

Bayley Fritsch, Charlie Spargo and Mitch Hannan combined for eight goals as Max Gawn ran riot in the ruck. Both sides were coming off short breaks after Anzac Day and Anzac Eve fixtures, but Melbourne got the upper hand early with seven goals to one in the opening term.

What it means for Melbourne: At 0-2, Melbourne's slow start to the season is worrying. The Demons need to find form and quickly before the season slips away from their grasp.

What it means for Essendon: After a calamitous beginning to the season, the Bombers' confidence has been severely dented. The pressure is well and truly on coach John Worsfold and his team to deliver. There are no more excuses.

How Melbourne wins: Convert 72 inside 50s into more than six goals. Efficiency going inside 50 will be a key focus area for Melbourne on the training track this week after the drubbing in Geelong.

How Essendon wins: Match Melbourne for contested possessions and limit their effectiveness going inside 50 from a defensive point of view. Their small forwards also need to lift their own rate and start trapping the ball inside 50.

The stat: Melbourne has started the season with a win-loss record of 0-2 36 times in club history. The Demons have only made the finals once (2006) from that position.

The match-up: Max Gawn v Tom Bellchambers

Gawn is ranked at No.7 in the Schick AFL Player Ratings based on his form across the past two seasons, although his latest form is nowhere near comparable to that. Bellchambers, the 10th-ranked ruckman in the AFL, has also struggled in Essendon's first two games.

It's a big week for: John Worsfold

The Bombers coach is under a great deal of pressure after his side's horrendous start to the 2019 season. Getting a win on the board is vital, but rediscovering the brand of football they played at the back-end of last season is the starting point.

Big call: Three goals apiece to Tom McDonald and Sam Weideman to lead the Demons to their first victory of the season.

Prediction: Melbourne by 17 points

2019 AFL season: Round 3 preview

Rivalries galore in Round 3 of the AFL, with up to five grand final rematches from yesteryear, rematches of the two preliminary finals from 2017 and this century’s most bizarre rivalry among the highlights.
There are up to five grand final rematches taking place this round, ranging from the infamous 1945 bloodbath between Carlton and South Melbourne to last year’s epic, in which the West Coast Eagles defied all before them to defeat Collingwood for its fourth flag.

For the second time, the two preliminary final match-ups from 2017 will take place in the same round, with the Adelaide Crows facing the Geelong Cats at the Oval and the GWS Giants hosting Richmond in Sydney (though in 2017, it was the Tigers that had the home ground advantage).

And while the bizarre rivalry that once existed between Fremantle and St Kilda has died down, their showdown at Optus Stadium to finish Round 3 will still be one to watch, to see whether Freo can bounce back at home or whether the Saints can make it three in a row to start a season for the first time since 2010.

Here is your preview to Round 3.

Adelaide Crows versus Geelong Cats
Round 3 kicks off with the first of the two preliminary final rematches from 2017, when the Adelaide Crows welcome the Geelong Cats to the Oval for what promises to be a genuine blockbuster.

It was in that year which the Crows demolished the Cats by ten goals to advance to its first grand final since 1998, before ultimately losing in the grand final to Richmond.

After a disappointing loss to Hawthorn in their season opener, the men from West Lakes got off the mark in impressive style last Friday night, defeating the Sydney Swans by 26 points at the SCG and registering their 13th win from 20 appearances at the iconic venue.

The highlight was a 60-metre goal from Paul Seedsman on the quarter-time siren, which set the scene for the Crows to stay ahead for the remainder of the match after the Swans mounted their usual challenge in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, the Cats have started the season strongly; after coming from behind to beat Collingwood in Round 1, they showed no mercy towards Melbourne in their first home game of the season, winning by 80 points to take top spot on the ladder.

The demolition of the Dees was highlighted by a first career goal for Jordan Clark, which was provided by Tom Hawkins, as well as a promising performance from Charlie Constable which saw him claim the AFL Rising Star nomination for Round 2.

As impressive as Chris Scott’s men were last week, facing the Crows, especially at the Oval, will be a tougher task altogether and while they will have their moments, I think the Crows should continue their good form and win their first match at home for the year.

Prediction: Adelaide Crows by 14 points.
