Match preview: Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round 16, 2018. Western Bulldogs 9.5 (59) lost to Hawthorn 19.8 (122)

Hawthorn star Luke Breust led the charge as the Hawks obliterated the Bulldogs by 63 points. Breust kicked a career-best six goals, four of those in the first term, while Jarryd Roughead and Jack Gunston booted four apiece. Daniel Howe had the job tagging star Marcus Bontempelli, with the Dogs vice-captain gathering 23 possessions but he had little impact. The loss for the Dogs effectively ended their hopes of making the finals.

What it means for Hawthorn: Many pundits didn't have Hawthorn in the top eight this season, and while a shock win over the Crows may have swayed a few, the Hawks need to keep the momentum going and bank as many early wins as possible.

What it means for Western Bulldogs: The last time the Bulldogs beat the Hawks was in a semi-final during their premiership-winning year. If they can nab the four points here, the confidence levels at the Kennel will be sky-high.

How Hawthorn wins: It was an even contribution across the board against the Crows. Ben McEvoy was impressive in the ruck, and if he can continue his dominance and give first use to young Hawks James Worpel and Jaeger O'Meara, they will be hard to stop.

How Western Bulldogs wins: Round one saw the Bulldogs return to the manic pressure that delivered them a premiership in 2016. If they can keep that up, it will go a long way to stopping the Hawks in their tracks.

The stat: The Bulldogs struggled last year when it came to entries inside 50. They were ranked 12th in the competition, averaging 52 per game. Already there is a huge improvement in 2019, with 68 against the Swans in the opening round, which has them leading the competition.

The match-up: James Sicily v Aaron Naughton

Aaron Naughton announced himself as the Bulldogs' No.1 forward against the Swans, his athleticism and presence causing plenty of headaches for the Sydney defence. He kicked three goals and took five marks inside 50. James Frawley probably doesn't have the speed to keep up with Naughton, with young Hawk James Sicily a better match-up. Sicily spent time on Taylor Walker in round one and kept him goalless, while having 26 disposals, 15 rebound 50s and taking 10 marks himself.

It's a big week for: Chad Wingard

The question is will he play? He has said publicly that he is eyeing off a return in round two following a pre-season marred by a troublesome calf. Should he make his debut for the brown and gold, he'll need a good showing to justify to the Hawks giving up young gun Ryan Burton and last year's pick 15 in the NAB AFL Draft.

Preview: Port v Blues

Sam Walsh and Nic Newman gave a fans a glimpse into what the Blues’ new recruits are capable of, providing some spark in an emphatic second-quarter fightback against Richmond.

Port Adelaide will have the home crowd in their favour, so the Blues will need to a strong start if they are to silence them.

The Power will be a formidable opponent, with their 26-point victory over Melbourne still front of mind. Tom Rockliff starred with 44 disposals, while he was well-supported by Justin Westhoff (five goals) and Travis Boak (34 disposals, one goal).

THE LAST TIME THEY MET:
The Blues fought hard for milestone man Kade Simpson in his 300th game in Round 15 last year.

Simpson was inspiring across half-back, notching up a game-high 37 disposals to keep the Blues in contention until early in the fourth. He became just the third player to poll three Brownlow votes in his 300th game.

Gun forward Charlie Curnow impressed in the air with nine marks and finished the day with four majors as one of Carlton’s best.

Despite a strong start and a third-quarter resurgence, Port Adelaide ran out the Blues to finish with a 21-point victory.

BLUE FOCUS:
Marquee recruit Mitch McGovern will run out in the navy blue for his 50th game when the Blues face Port Adelaide.

It will be familiar territory for the high-flying forward: it will be McGovern’s first match at Adelaide Oval since making the move from the Crows in the off-season.

The new recruits made a strong start for the Blues and is one of six debutants who keep their spot from last week.

GET EXCITED ABOUT:
Fans will be pleased to see the return on Nic Newman and Will Setterfield in the team selection for Round 2.

The pair made an immediate impact on debut for the Blues, with Newman racking up 26 disposals across half-back and Setterfield notching 24 through the midfield to be in Carlton’s best for Round 1.

BLUE VIEW:
Carlton captured the imagination of Bluebaggers for two quarters in the season opener, but now it’s time to make that a four-quarter reality.

With the Power midfield proving a headache for Melbourne in Round 1, it will be a game won and lost in the centre.

But with Patrick Cripps at the helm and emerging stars already making an impact, it is certain to be a hard-fought contest.

Saints ready for Bombers to fire up

St Kilda are bracing for an Essendon backlash when the AFL teams meet at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

While the Saints escaped with a one-point win in their season opener against Gold Coast, the Bombers were pilloried for their efforts in the 72-point loss to GWS.

Saints coach Alan Richardson says they're expecting a big response from the Bombers after their round one disappointment, with their midfield the main target for criticism.

"We've certainly planned for the Bombers' best," Richardson said on Friday.

"We know that they're a really strong attacking team and they've got talent all over the field.

"We're focused on a really strong, aggressive Essendon team."

Richardson said they were mostly focused on improving their own game, which he described as "inconsistent" against the Suns.

He was happy with the way his defenders hung tough in the final quarter to help secure the tight win, but felt others areas needed improvement.

"We thought at times we were a bit slow and conservative so we will look to be more aggressive," he said.

"During the pre-season we've built some different components to the way we defend and attack and that was a bit inconsistent."

Meanwhile, Richardson said the decision to relieve star recruit Dan Hannebery of leadership duties was a joint one, with Nathan Brown taking his spot.

Hannebery's hamstrings and calves have proved troublesome when he hits top speed in training.

He said the club did the same thing last year when defender Dylan Roberton went down, with Tim Membrey elevated to the leadership group.

"That was a decision that we made in consultation with Dan, that was best for Dan," Richardson said.

"We just think Dan's got to that stage where he just needs to focus on Dan and get himself right.

"There's a lot in leadership and we wanted to take some of that away from him, just to make sure that he can get himself right."

Match preview: Adelaide v Sydney

The contest could have been over at the first change had the visitors not kicked 4.9 in the opening term, but it didn't cost them in the end. Crows captain Taylor Walker kicked crucial goals and with Swan Lance Franklin well held by Daniel Talia at the other end, it inspired his team's win.

What it means for Sydney: The Swans lost seven games at home last year and can ill-afford to make a poor start at the SCG on Friday night, especially after last week's disappointing loss to the Western Bulldogs.

What it means for Adelaide: The Crows were widely tipped as premiership chances before round one and were shocked at home by Hawthorn. A 0-2 start to the year would be disastrous.

How Sydney wins: The Swans' midfield was well beaten by the Dogs last week and Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker, George Hewett and Isaac Heeney will be out to make amends and get more ball to Franklin and his fellow forwards.

How Adelaide wins: If Daniel Talia and Alex Keath can handle Franklin and Sam Reid, and Rory Laird and Brodie Smith can get their hands on the footy at ground level off half-back, the Swans will find it hard to kick a winning score.

The stat: The Swans were smashed around the footy last week against the Bulldogs, losing the contested possessions (151-125) and stoppage clearances (30-22), which resulted in them giving up 68 inside 50s, and only generating 47 themselves.

The match-up: Lance Franklin v Daniel Talia

Even with his severely limited preparation, Franklin is the man the Crows have to stop, and Talia has had success on him in the past. He's not likely to venture too far from goal again so Adelaide's midfield can't allow the opposition any freedom forward of centre, because if they can pinpoint Franklin, he can score from anywhere.

It’s a big week for: George Hewett

The stopper will likely get the job on Adelaide co-captain Rory Sloane, who had 11 clearances last week to go with 36 possessions in a losing side. The Crouch brothers Matt and Brad, and Rory Laird could be other options, but Sloane is the heart and soul of the Crows and must be clamped.

Big call: After spending most of the game forward last week, Isaac Heeney will return to the midfield and have a big influence with his fierce tackling around the contest. Mark him down for 30+ disposals and a couple of goals.

Match preview: Richmond v Collingwood

Last time they met: MCG, preliminary final, 2018: Richmond 8.10 (58) lost to Collingwood 15.7 (97)

The Collingwood train left a shell-shocked Richmond in its wake, with Mason Cox dominating up forward in a second-term burst that resulted in a 53-point lead. Richmond rallied on the back of Jack Riewoldt's five goals, but it was too little, too late.

What it means for Richmond: Redemption. The Tigers were wounded after the Magpies overran them in the preliminary final. The two sides match up well, with Collingwood regularly causing Richmond trouble over the past few years.

What it means for Collingwood: The Magpies are under the pump after a sluggish seven-point loss to Geelong in round one. A big win over last year's minor premiers would be a strong statement.

How Richmond wins: Geelong's new-look speedy forward line poked holes in Collingwood's defence, and Richmond has the personnel to do the same. Big forwards Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt need to bring their smaller teammates into the game.

How Collingwood wins: Exploit Richmond's second ruckman. Collingwood has the best midfield in the competition and will greatly benefit from Brodie Grundy going head-to-head with second-gamer Noah Balta.

The stat: Richmond star defender Alex Rance has missed two games since round nine, 2014. He is now expected to be sidelined for the year after tearing his right ACL last week.

The match-up: Jordan De Goey v Dylan Grimes

Grimes (ranked 210th overall in the Schick AFL Player Ratings) will be hurting after De Goey (90th) kicked four last time they met. With De Goey capable of turning a match on its head, Grimes is set for a big task once again.

It's a big week for: Nick Vlastuin

It will be the first time we will have a look at life at Richmond without defensive general Rance. David Astbury's role taking the No.1 forward (Mason Cox) isn't expected to change, but Vlastuin may be forced to take greater responsibility.

Big call: After a quieter game by his lofty standards (23 disposals), expect Dayne Beams to dominate out of the middle in his second match back in the black and white and even kick two goals.

Prediction: Magpies by seven points

GWS Giants vs Essendon Bombers Tips, Odds and Teams – AFL 2019 Week 1

We take a look at Sunday afternoons (24/03/2019) AFL Week 1 match which is between the GWS Giants and Essendon Bombers. View the odds for both teams as well as our Tips and Bets for the match.

The Giants will get a chance to prove themselves against Shiel's Essendon Bombers when the two sides lock horns at the Sydney Showground to open their AFL campaign on Sunday.

"The method when we started up as a club was to get the best talent through the door. In that case, when people leave, they’re still very good players and we’re getting high draft picks in return for them," Whitfield said.

"I believe our premiership window is going to be pretty consistently open over the next decade. We’re going to be bringing good young talent in, and we’ve got a good program which moulds them in the right way.

"I’m a pretty strong believer that we’ve got a pretty open window to potentially win a flag in the foreseeable future.

"It’s pretty obvious the new young talent we’ve got through the doors over the past few years is really starting to blossom.

"Tim Taranto has had two really good [pre-season] games, and we probably see a real breakout year coming from him. Aidan Bonar as well, he’s had a huge pre-season. Isaac Cumming and Brent Daniels are showing what they can do.

Preview:

The Giants have won at least one finals game in the past three seasons but just can’t get over the hump and there is fear that their premiership window may be closing ever so slightly. They host an Essendon side that will fancy themselves as finals contenders after winning 10 of their final 13 games after losing six from eight to start the year, including a loss to bottom-placed Carlton. Joe Daniher and Cale Hooker are the only injury concerns for the red and blacks, while the Giants look lean in the ruck with Shane Mumford and Jonathan Patton both out. Essendon dominated GWS in Sydney a season ago by 35 points and while The Wolf thinks this one will be a bit closer, the result will be the same.

Bradley Hill fit for Fremantle Dockers AFL round one clash with North Melbourne

Bradley Hill says the players were rapt to see Jesse Hogan back on the training track as he declared himself fit for the clash against North Melbourne.

Hill did little at Dockers training yesterday but this morning declared he is ‘pretty confident’ he is over the cork suffered during the JLT series.

“I trained Friday, the leg feel fine, so I’m pretty certain I’ll be playing as long as they pick me,” the speedy 25-year-old told 6PR.

“I’m ready to go and I can’t wait, it’s been a long pre-season, it’s what we all look forward to and I can’t wait for Sunday.”

While Hill had a light session, Hogan trained strongly during the 90-minute session at Cockburn.

The 24-year-old is out indefinitely as he battles clinical anxiety.

Hill said the Melbourne recruit was popular among the players and they just wanted to see him back and playing again.

“He doesn’t have a bad bone in his body and we love him at the club, he’s fit into the playing group really well and we definitely enjoy his company,” he said.

Brisbane Lions keen to measure up against ‘competition’s best’ West Coast Eagles

It won’t define their season, but Brisbane’s AFL players are viewing Saturday’s season opener against West Coast as a test of where the club sits in 2019.

With recruits Lachie Neale, Lincoln McCarthy and Jarryd Lyons coming in, Brisbane are tipped by many to be 2019’s big improvers.

Whether that improvement can stretch to a win over the reigning premiers straight away is dubious, but young gun Cam Rayner is eager to face the Eagles.

“All the boys are super excited, we get to measure ourselves against the competition’s best in the first round,” Rayner said.

“It’ll be a really good stepping stone for the rest of our season.”

Darcy Gardiner’s return from a knee injury will boost the Lions’ backline, while the Eagles head east without forwards Josh Kennedy and Willie Rioli.

Ex-St Kilda ruckman Tom Hickey and defender Brad Sheppard are among six Eagles faces who didn’t play in last year’s grand final win over Collingwood.

“Their forward line is still looking pretty good,” Rayner said.

“They’ve got a couple of young boys in there now, (Jack) Petruccelle is playing and Oscar Allen as well.

“It’s good to have Darcy back. He’s such a trustworthy player down back.”

The Eagles hold a great recent record against the Lions, winning the past eight games between the clubs in a streak stretching back to 2012.

Captain Dayne Zorko, veteran Daniel Rich and Ryan Lester are the only Lions remaining at the club who were a part of that 2012 win.

“They’ve been the best team in the competition in contested ball and their spread is really good,” Rayner said.

“We watched vision from last time we played but we’ve got new players and a new team. We’ve been sticking to our structures this year so we’re just going to go out there and play our footy and see how it matches up against the best.”

Preview:

The Brisbane Lions should be one of the big movers once its all said and done this season as they push for finals for the first time since 2009. It’s a tough ask for them in round one as they face reigning champs the West Coast Eagles. Recent results between the two clubs is grim reading for the Lions fans, who will see that their club has lost their past eight games to West Coast dating back to 2012. The Gabba holds no fears for the Coasters either, who’ve picked up five wins on the trot at the ground. Josh Kennedy is the big injury concern for the visitors and he will need to prove his fitness before taking the field in this one. Andrew Gaff and Nic Naitanui will both miss out for the champs. The Lions have a relatively clean bill of health when it comes to their star players and will welcome the chance to test themselves against the best there is. The Wolf thinks it’s hard to ignore West Coast’s total dominance of the Lions when picking a winner in this match and although they had a shorter pre-season than most, will be too good on Saturday night.

Match preview: Western Bulldogs vs Sydney Swans, Round 1 2019

The Swans have first shot at christening the newly named Marvel Stadium with another win against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night, while the Bulldogs will be gunning for payback for their upset loss in Round 4 of 2018.
Oliver Florent was the surprise packet of the game, booting the winning goal on the run in front of ruckman Tim English, while Luke Parker picked up the three Brownlow votes with 21 disposals and three goals.

The Swans went from strength to strength after their clash, entering the bye with a 10-3 record, before spectacularly crashing out of the top eight while the Bulldogs struggled all year, finishing 14th with eight wins.

Despite rarely training and nursing a heel injury, superstar Lance Franklin booted three second-half goals and was influential throughout, finishing with 16 disposals, ten marks and two Brownlow votes.

Jack Macrae was one of the Bulldogs’ shining lights, picking up 34 disposals and regularly threatening to blow the game open, with Marcus Bontompelli bobbing up for 21 disposals and two goals.

After the Bulldogs raced out to a 22-point lead early in the second quarter, the Swans rallied and took the lead early in the third quarter before going into the final change level.

The Swans will miss tough defender Nick Smith for the clash but welcome back Sam Reid, Lewis Melican and Callum Mills, as well as debuts to Nick Blakey and Ryan Clarke.

The Western Bulldogs are nursing a long injury list, with Tom Boyd, Lin Jong, Dale Bailey, Jason Johannisen, Dale Morris and Liam Picken missing, and will look to the heavens when the Swans’ tall forward line takes station.

Last five meetings
R4, 2018, Sydney Swans 13.8 (86) d Western Bulldogs 11.13 (79) at Etihad
R12, 2017, Sydney Swans 12.16 (88) d Western Bulldogs 6.6 (42) at the SCG
R2, 2017, Western Bulldogs 16.14 (110) d Sydney Swans 13.9 (87) at Etihad
GF, 2016, Western Bulldogs 13.11 (89) d Sydney Swans 10.7 (67) at the MCG
R15, 2016, Western Bulldogs 13.5 (83) d Sydney Swans 11.13 (79) at the SCG

Key matchups

Luke Parker vs Jack Macrae
Luke Parker’s form throughout the JLT series looked close to his 2016 best, while Jack Macrae has improved every year. Both players are arguably their teams’ most important midfielder and will need to be at their absolute best if their side is going to win.

Aliir Aliir vs Tim English
The biggest surprise in the JLT Community Series for Swans fans was watching defender Aliir Aliir tear it up in the ruck. While he was never going to outmuscle the bigger and stronger opponents, his leap and reach troubled his opposite numbers.

His ability to snap the ball out of the contest and sprint from the pack lead to a number of scoring opportunities for the Swans and was reminiscent of former champion Adam Goodes.

Lance Franklin vs Easton Wood
The Bulldogs are short on defenders and Franklin is short on fitness. Will it make a difference for the big guy? If history is anything to go by, not a bit. Someone that can kick almost 60 goals while hardly training for an entire season is special, so Wood is going to have to channel his inner Phil Davis to have a chance here.

The six points
1: The last time they played, a three-goal second-half burst by Franklin set the Swans up for victory. He had the unlikely match-up of Aaron Naughton in the first half, before blowing him away ten minutes into the third quarter.

2: Lance Franklin has enjoyed great success playing the Western Bulldogs, averaging 17.06 (2nd highest) disposals per game and kicking 58 goals in 18 matches.

3: Sydney were the ninth-ranked contested football side for 2018 with 147 per game, the Bulldogs were ranked 14th with 139.5.

4: The Swans were the fifth-ranked contested marking team in 2018 averaging 11.7 per game, the Bulldogs were ranked 15th with 9.5

5: Both Sydney and the Western Bulldogs struggled for hit-outs in 2018, the Swans ranked 15th with 32 per game, while the Bulldogs were last with 27.8 per game.

6: The last time they played, the Western Bulldogs had +13 free kicks, +52 disposals, +8 clearances, +18 inside 50s, with the Swans winning by seven points.

Prediction

Sydney Swans by 19.

Match preview: Adelaide v Hawthorn

Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Saturday, March 23, 4.05pm (ACDT)

Last time they met: MCG, round 13, 2018: Hawthorn 12.16 (88) beat Adelaide 4.8 (32).

The Hawks blew the game apart in the third quarter, turning a four-point half-time buffer into a comfortable 48-point lead at the final change. James Sicily starred for the Hawks with 24 disposals and three goals, and Tom Mitchell had 40 touches on his way to the Brownlow Medal. It was the fourth-straight loss for the undermanned Crows, who were without Rory Sloane, Rory Laird, Brad Crouch, Tom Lynch and Brodie Smith.

CO-CAPTAINCY: Sloane's trump card over Tex

What it means for Adelaide: This is a fresh start for the Crows after a disappointing season in 2018. They've got almost a full list to choose from and are primed for a quick bounce back to premiership contention

What it means for Hawthorn: It's a difficult first-up assignment without Tom Mitchell – likely to miss the season with a broken leg – star recruits Chad Wingard and Tom Scully, and veteran Grant Birchall.

How Adelaide wins: The Crows will be looking to transition the ball quickly out of defence, spread hard from contests and give their forwards plenty of quality ball inside the attacking 50.

How Hawthorn wins: The midfield battle will be crucial. Jaeger O'Meara, Liam Shiels, James Worpel and James Cousins at least need to break even with Rory Sloane, Brad and Matt Crouch and Bryce Gibbs to give their forwards enough opportunities and deny Adelaide's star-studded attack the chance to run riot.

The stat: The Hawks have a sensational recent record against the Crows, winning nine of their past 10 encounters. Adelaide Oval doesn't hold any fears for the Hawks, who have won  all three games against the Crows at the venue.

The match-up: Daniel Talia v Jarryd Roughead

These two experienced bookends have had plenty of battles over the years. According to the Schick AFL Player Ratings, Talia is ranked No. 6 among key defenders in the competition while Roughead, fresh off booting five goals in the JLT Community Series game against Richmond, is the seventh-best key forward in the League.

It's a big week for: Brad Crouch

The Crows midfielder will be looking to make up for lost time after he missed all of last season with a groin injury. Crouch was outstanding during the JLT Community Series with his ability to play inside and outside the contest.

Big call: Josh Jenkins to make an early push for the Coleman Medal by booting six goals.

Prediction: Adelaide by 25 points

Melbourne Demons vs Port Adelaide Power Tips, Odds and Teams – AFL 2019

We take a look at Saturday afternoons (23/03/2019) AFL Week 1 match which is between Melbourne Demons and the Port Adelaide Power. View the odds for both teams as well as our Tips and Bets for the match.

Port Adelaide is bullish about its fresh six-pack surviving an AFL baptism of fire against finals fancy Melbourne.

The Power will give six players their debut for the club in Saturday's MCG encounter and assistant coach Michael Voss is confident they'll handle the heat.

"We promised a different look about us in 2019 and that goes some to say how committed we are to ensure it happens, not just in the way we want to play but the personnel we have" Voss told reporters on Friday.

Recruits Scott Lycett (ex-West Coast) and Ryan Burton (ex-Hawthon) will debut for the Power against the Demons.

They will be joined by a trio of new draftees in Connor Rozee, Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma, who will play their first AFL games, as will third-year player Willem Drew.

Voss conceded there was a risk the newcomers may become overawed.

"You can probably ask any player in the AFL and they're always at risk of that," he said.

"But we don't form the view on one particular day, we form a view over pre-season.

"The mental aptitude to be able to play the game is obviously a critical factor and they handle the game really well - if anything we think they will thrive.

"They can expect an increase in intensity but we have seen enough from them over the pre-season to be fairly well educated that they will handle it pretty well."

The Demons will also have two new faces.

Marty Hore, a dual VFL best and fairest winner at Collingwood, will debut alongside Corey Wagner, who was cut by North Melbourne following the 2017 season after playing eight AFL games.

Melbourne is widely expected to challenge for this year's premiership after its 2018 run ended with defeat in a preliminary final.

"They play a really strong brand of footy, clearly they bring a real contested element to the game which is going to test us," Voss said.

Preview:

The Dees were a whisker away from last years Grand Final but were totally outclassed by the eventual champs West Coast in the prelim final. They come back this season having improved their defence, acquiring gun former Gold Coast defender Steven May, although he misses this one through suspension. The Power disappointingly missed last season’s finals and on their day can be one of the competitions most exciting teams. The trouble for Ken Hinkley’s men is that they struggle to play consistent footy. The selection table will present plenty of headaches for the veteran coach with Charlie Dixon, Ollie Wines and Hamish Hartlett all out, while Paddy Ryder will be given until later in the week to prove his fitness. As many as four debutants could lace up the boots for the Port in this one. The teams have split their past four meetings and the Power have a 4-3 win-loss record at the ‘G since 2015. Despite this, The Wolf sees the Dees winning this one comfortably given the Power’s lack of experience in midfield, with the home side to kick away in the second half.

Match preview: Geelong Cats vs Collingwood Magpies

Where and when: MCG, Friday March 22, 7.50pm

Last time they met: MCG, round eight, 2018: Collingwood 5.15 (45) lost to Geelong 9.12 (66)

In a scrappy, low-scoring affair, the Cats kicked four of the opening five goals, restricting the Pies to just one goal by half-time, and set up a matchwinning break with three successive majors in the third term. The Pies were two short for much of the second half.

What it means for Collingwood: A win for the 2018 runner-up is crucial given it faces Richmond and reigning premier West Coast in the following fortnight.

What it means for Geelong: This season has been billed as the last chance for the Cats to succeed with this group, and a victory here would certainly have the fans dreaming about another flag.

How Collingwood wins: The Magpies' 'Swoop Squad' of small and medium-sized forwards, comprising the likes of Jordan De Goey, Jamie Elliott, Jaidyn Stephenson, Travis Varcoe and Josh Thomas, has the potential to pose enormous headaches for the Cats, who will be without important stoppers Zach Tuohy and Jed Bews.

How Geelong wins: Although Brodie Grundy is expected to take the upperhand in the ruck, the Cats' midfield is more than capable of gaining the ascendancy, which would provide power forward Tom Hawkins with his best chance of exposing the new-look Pies' defence.

The stat: Geelong has won 11 of its past 14 round one games, while Collingwood has won just two from seven under Nathan Buckley, and has been beaten in its past three season openers.

The match-up: Joel Selwood v Levi Greenwood. The Magpie desperado (ranked No. 380 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) appears set to renew his heated relationship with the Cats skipper (No. 53), against whom he has a good record. Selwood will be hellbent on getting one back on him.

It’s a big week for: Jamie Elliott. The Magpie livewire has missed two of the past three seasons through injury and will make his first AFL appearance in 19 months. Fit and firing after a strong pre-season, he won't simply ease himself back – he might well prove the matchwinner.

Big call: Pies defender Jack Crisp will upstage the two powerful midfields to be the most prolific ball winner afield.

Prediction: Magpies by 19 points

Richmond Tigers vs Carlton Blues  Tips, Odds and Teams – AFL 2019 Week 1

We take a look at Thursday nights (21/03/2019) AFL Week 1 match which is between Carlton Blues and Richmond Tigers. View the odds for both teams as well as our Tips and Bets for the Carlton Blues vs Richmond Tigers match.

Preview:

To say it’s been a dramatic offseason would be an understatement. Richmond got busy signing Tom Lynch to a lucrative seven-year deal, while the Blues lucked out as co-captain Sam Docherty suffered a season-ending ACL tear.

Since it is Round 1, try not to let the wide price for Carlton sway you. The Blues were up for a fight this time last year booting five unanswered goals in the opening term to lead the premiers at halftime. Of course, Richmond’s prowess proved too much for the eventual wooden spooners, but there’s no reason Carlton can’t keep Thursday’s game close for the second-straight year.

For Richmond, it’s the start of something new after an embarrassing loss to Collingwood in last year’s Prelim. Lynch’s inclusion should speak for itself on the goal-sheet, but it’s also a huge year for Dustin Martin as he looks to bounce-back from what was a quiet season (at least by his usual standards).

As for Carlton, you hate to put too much stock into Round 1, but this game could set the tone for their season. The Blues should be up and about following a win over the Bombers and a close loss to Collingwood in the JLT Series. Whether or not they can handle Richmond’s relentless forward pressure will be the test.

It’s worth keeping in mind the Tigers have won seven-straight over the Blues, while they also finished 6-3 against the line last season. In their last five meetings however, Carlton have lost by a combined average of 26.8 points, leaving Thursday’s line looking a little generous.

Carlton vs Western Bulldogs 2019 AFL Women's season: Round 7 preview

There is just one round left in the AFL Women’s season and a lot of the focus will be on who finishes where, as well as whether Collingwood can snatch a late win and sentence the GWS Giants to their second wooden spoon in three seasons.
The two matches on Saturday between Melbourne and the Adelaide Crows, followed by Fremantle and North Melbourne in the west, will determine the final Conference A ladder, with two of those teams to be left heartbroken by the time the sun sets in the evening.

Carlton vs Western Bulldogs

The final match of the season will see Carlton attempt to qualify for the finals for the first time in AFLW history when they face Conference A wooden spooners the Western Bulldogs at the Whitten Oval.

After a slow start to the season, losing three of their first four matches, the Blues have revived their season in impressive style, defeating Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions to move to the top of Conference B with one match remaining.

The catalyst to their victory was a 26-disposal performance by Maddy Prespakis, while Brooke Walker kicked two majors.

They will start favourites against a Western Bulldogs side who have lost their last four matches and has nothing to play for, given they have already claimed the wooden spoon in Conference A.

The defending premiers were gallant against Melbourne, going down by just one point after Tegan Cunningham kicked the winning goal for the Dees in the second match of the Marvel Stadium double header.

While the match is effectively a dead rubber for the Bulldogs, a win over the Blues – which they achieved last year by 73 points thanks to a seven-goal haul from Brooke Lochland – would give them some confidence as they prepare for what is hopefully a much better 2020 season.

But the lure of a home preliminary final should get the Blues home in this one.

Prediction: Carlton by 13 points.

Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood 2019 AFL Women's season: Round 7 preview

There is just one round left in the AFL Women’s season and a lot of the focus will be on who finishes where, as well as whether Collingwood can snatch a late win and sentence the GWS Giants to their second wooden spoon in three seasons.
The two matches on Saturday between Melbourne and the Adelaide Crows, followed by Fremantle and North Melbourne in the west, will determine the final Conference A ladder, with two of those teams to be left heartbroken by the time the sun sets in the evening.

Sunday also shapes as a crucial day in the make-up of Conference B, with the Brisbane Lions needing to pray that both Carlton and the Geelong Cats are beaten, as well as score a huge win over Collingwood, if they are to force their way into September.

Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood

By the time Collingwood takes to Victoria Park for their final round clash against the Brisbane Lions, they will know whether they are still a chance of avoiding the overall wooden spoon.

They would have to pray that the GWS Giants are beaten by the Geelong Cats on Friday night, and a win for the Pies would see them overtake the Giants on percentage.

Regardless, Wayne Siekman’s side will be playing for pride after what has been a disappointing season, failing to win any of their six matches and going down to North Melbourne by 22 points in the Marvel Stadium double-header last Saturday night.

On the other hand, the Brisbane Lions have everything to play for in what will be their second consecutive match in Melbourne, after losing to Carlton by 16 points at Ikon Park last Sunday.

They must first rely on the Giants beating Geelong, and then beat the Pies by enough to overtake Carlton on percentage, and then ensure the Blues are beaten by the Western Bulldogs in the latter match.

Otherwise, if the Cats win, the Lions must beat the Pies by a huge margin and ensure the Blues are beaten heavily by the Bulldogs to qualify.

Any other result and the Lions will miss out altogether, so Craig Starcevich’s side will want to be switched on from the get-go.

Prediction: Brisbane Lions by 18 points.

GWS Giants vs Adelaide Crows: JLT Series AFL live

The GWS Giants and the Adelaide Crows will continue their pre-season preparations with a JLT Series clash at UNSW Canberra Oval come Friday night. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:10pm (AEDT).
It may only be a pre-season competition, but the JLT Series has been a success so far in terms of giving the fans competitive fixtures.

The Giants are coming off a really good 22-point win against their neighbour in the Sydney Swans. Those type of wins can give the group the belief and desire they need going into the home-and-away season.

In terms of the individuals who performed well for GWS, Stephen Coniglio had a superb game reeling in 35 disposals.

I know they are completely different formats of the game, but Coniglio also looked sharp in the AFLX, so he potentially could be in for a massive season.

Tim Taranto was the only other Giant to surpass the 30-disposal mark. Daniel Lloyd was sharp in front of goal, finishing the game with three majors.

As for the Crows, they are coming off a 17-point victory over their arch-rival, the Port Adelaide Power.

The Crows no doubt will be looking to have a huge season after such a disappointing campaign in 2018, so this was not a bad way to start.

Matt Crouch was the only Crow to surpass 30 disposals, with Brad Crouch the next best with 29 disposals.

Eddie Betts was clinical in front of goal, finishing the game with four majors. The Crows will need Betts at his absolute best this season, and if pre-season is anything to go by, they may get their wish.

Those who starred for the Giants and Crows last week will be looking to do it all again on Friday night.

Prediction
As many like to state, it is only a pre-season clash, which means the result does not matter. That is true, but I think we will see a really competitive game between these two sides nonetheless.

The Crows to prevail by 10 points.

AFLW squad: Strong ins for big Bulldogs clash

Fremantle will potentially have four inclusions for Saturday’s blockbuster Conference A clash with the Western Bulldogs on Sunday at Fremantle Oval.

The squad will be cut from 23 to a final team of 21 on Friday, with inclusions Hayley Miller, Alica Janz, Leah Mascall and potential debutant Matilda Sergeant all vying for selection.

Ashlee Atkins and Courtney Stubbs are Fremantle’s two omissions at this stage.

Fremantle senior coach Trent Cooper said Miller was the most likely of the four inclusions to return, with the star midfielder missing Freo’s round four loss to Adelaide due to suspension.

“Hayley was just building up to her best form after an interrupted pre-season,” Cooper said.

“She was really good against Collingwood with her drive and her clearance work and getting the ball forward. She’ll slot straight back into our midfield.”

If Janz is selected, Cooper said she is likely to be used as support in the ruck.

“Alicia had a PCL at the end of last season so that’s kept her out," Cooper said.

“She’s been building nicely, she had a hitout last week in a game with the WAFC which has put her into contention to come back and maybe support Parris Laurie in the ruck.”

Sergeant joined Fremantle with pick no.62 from Claremont in the 2018 NAB AFL Women’s draft and missed the start of the season due to injury.

“Matilda was really good during the pre-season, she would have played in round one if it wasn’t for a small hip injury that’s kept her out,” Cooper said.

“She’s a good user of the ball, she’s clean around the contest and when she does get her opportunity, she’ll add a fair bit our midfield.”

Cooper said Mascall has been pushing her case to return at training following her omission after playing in the opening two games of the season.

“Leah has been really close the past couple of weeks and she’s been added to the squad and is pressing her claim in defence,” Cooper said.

“She’s putting her hand up for selection, so there’s four good ins added to our squad.”

The clash is crucial for both teams, with Fremantle and the Bulldogs both looking to bounce back from losses in round four and push into the top-two in Conference A.

Fremantle sit behind second-placed Adelaide on percentage while the Bulldogs are a win and percentage out of a finals place with three games to play.

“Like us, the Bulldogs will probably feel like they were disappointing last week, but we’re not preparing for them on that form,” Cooper said.

“Their previous form was very good, they were last years premiers and they knocked off Adelaide in round one.

“They have a very good and highly skilled team, probably the best in the competition, so we need to bring pressure against them to get the ball going our way.”

SQUAD V BULLDOGS
Backs: Evie Gooch, Tayla Bresland, Angelique Stannett
Half backs: Alex Williams, Ebony Antonio, Kara Donnellan
Centre: Philippa Seth, Dana Hooker, Stephanie Cain
Ruck: Parris Laurie
Half forwards: Gemma Houghton, Ashley Sharp, Hayley Miller
Forwards: Kiara Bowers, Kellie Gibson, Sabreena Duffy
Interchange: Alicia Janz, Laura Pugh, Gabby O’Sullivan, Matilda Sergeant, Mel Caulfield

Live AFL Women’s: Round 5, Carlton v Collingwood

It’s season on the line for both Carlton and Collingwood as the traditional rivals clash in a must-win encounter on Saturday night.
The Blues (1-3, 84.8%) were unlucky to lose last week against Geelong but because they did, they are behind the eight-ball in Conference B; finals are still a real possibility with a win this week, though.

The Magpies (0-4, 56.2%) are still in the finals race - thanks to Conference B leaders Brisbane and Geelong coming into this round at 2-2, and there being three weeks left - but realistically must win every game from here to make it.

When Collingwood's AFLW players trudged from the field after last weekend's loss to Greater Western Sydney, the Magpies entered uncharted territory with four successive defeats to begin the season.

It also meant the four players who switched from Collingwood to North Melbourne this year – Emma King, Moana Hope, Jasmine Garner and Jess Duffin – had scored more goals between them than the Collingwood squad this season.

Saturday night's clash with last year's wooden spooners Carlton is a return to where it all started in 2017, when more than 24,000 fans packed Ikon Park, a lockout in the AFLW's first match. For Collingwood, it should have been the start of something special; the Magpies subsequently finished fifth, then sixth last year.

They've gone close on occasions this season, including a one-point loss to Geelong in round one, but turned in a wretched performance the following week against Melbourne, mustering just one goal.

Eddie McGuire's club simply doesn't tolerate a lack of success. As Collingwood's general manager of women's sport, Jane Woodlands-Thompson, acknowledges: "The fans obviously want to see wins on the board, particularly at a club that has such a proud history of tradition and success."

2019 AFL Women's season: Geelong Cats vs Brisbane Lions preview

We reach the halfway mark of the 2019 AFL Women’s season this weekend, and after three rounds there has been scathing criticism of the fixture, with all the teams in Conference A proving to be stronger than their Conference B counterparts.

A major anomaly of the fixture is that the worst team in Conference A, the Western Bulldogs, has a better record than the top team in Conference B, Carlton (which is ahead of the Bulldogs on per centage by just 0.2 per cent), which registered its first win for the season last week.

In fact, if you put the two conferences ladder together, then the overall ladder would not change one bit.

What it does mean is that we have the two worst teams overall, Collingwood and the GWS Giants, facing off this Sunday in Morwell in what is effectively a battle to remain in the finals race.

Other highlights of the round include the grand final rematch between the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions, as well as clashes between in-form teams the Adelaide Crows and Fremantle, as well as between Melbourne and North Melbourne.

All matches last week were decided by at least 29 points, which is a strong indication that scoring is well up on previous rounds.

Here is your preview to Round 4.

Geelong Cats vs Carlton

After two tough losses on the road, the Geelong Cats return home this Saturday to host a Carlton side that is buzzing following its first win for the season.

Despite the return of Richelle Cranston from a two-match suspension, Paul Hood’s side proved to be no match for the Crows in Adelaide last week.

This followed their 18-point loss to the Western Bulldogs in Round 2, in which they were kept scoreless in the second and fourth quarters, which goes to show that their forward line, which is the third-worst in the AFLW (only ahead of the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood), is still a work in progress.

Meantime, the Blues broke a twelve-month winning drought by upsetting the GWS Giants by 29 points in Blacktown last weekend, registering their highest-ever score of 10.5 (65) in the process.

After a disastrous 2018 season which saw them claim the wooden spoon after holding top spot at the end of Round 2, new coach Daniel Harford stripped back the game plan, thus allowing his side to play with more freedom.

This was evident when they led the Adelaide Crows by 17 points midway through the third quarter before capitulating to lose by 13, and it was also on display last week as they never really let the Giants into the match.

In a major boost for the Blues, they’ll have forward Tayla Harris available after she successfully downgraded her rough conduct charge against Pepa Randall, escaping with a reprimand rather than the one-match suspension she could have accepted.

It’s a tough one to pick, but I’ll back the Cats at home.

Prediction: Geelong Cats by 14 points.

With only three rounds of the AFL Women’s season remaining before the finals, time is running out for a number of teams.

There are two top-of-the-conference clashes in both pools this weekend, the first seeing two-time grand finalists the Brisbane Lions come up against the Geelong Cats, and the other with competition pacesetters North Melbourne hosting 2017 premiers the Adelaide Crows in Werribee.

Meantime, Collingwood will be desperate to get on the board when hosting Carlton, while the Greater Western Sydney Giants will be out to build on last week’s win over the Pies when they host Melbourne in Blacktown.

The other match sees both Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs look to make amends for poor Round 4 showings.

Here is your guide to Round 5.

Brisbane Lions vs Geelong Cats
After two dismal losses against Fremantle and Melbourne, Brisbane needed to bounce back if they were to have any chance of reviving their finals hopes – and they did so in devastating fashion last Saturday night.

In their first meeting against the Western Bulldogs since last year’s grand final, the Lions not only exacted some revenge, but also hammered the Dogs by 32 points to rocket up to the top of Conference B.

Forward Sabrina Frederick-Traub rebounded from a forgettable showing against the Dees to be one of the Lions’ best.

The Cats – who were also coming off two losses, though to the Western Bulldogs and Crows – survived a major scare against Carlton before eventually prevailing by five points, the result seeing them claim second place in Conference B.

But they will be without Maddie Boyd and Aasta O’Connor for the trip to Brisbane, after copping suspensions for rough conduct and striking, respectively.

Prediction: Brisbane Lions by 14 points.
