Match preview: Sydney v Collingwood

Where and when: SCG, Friday May 24, 7.50pm AEST

Last time they met: SCG, round 20, 2018: Sydney 11.7 (73) defeated Colingwood 10.11 (71)

Alex Johnson made an emotional return to senior footy to inspire his side to a thrilling win. Lance Franklin's six goals were the difference and he was awarded the three Brownlow medal votes, but young forward Tom McCartin was the hero. The Pies kicked three late goals to snatch the lead before McCartin booted a goal while lying on his back to give Sydney the victory.

What it means for Sydney: Two close wins over the past two weeks has given the young Swans confidence but they'll face a much sterner test from the Pies. It will show them exactly where they stand.

What it means for Collingwood: With the four teams just one game behind them on the ladder all facing tough challenges this weekend, a Pies win could give them a handy eight-point buffer in second spot in an incredibly even season.

How Sydney wins:  The Swans can't match Collingwood's star-studded side for talent or experience, but they've shown over the past fortnight if they scrap and pressure the opposition, they can be more than competitive.

How Collingwood wins: The Pies midfield is full of stars and with a dominant ruckman in Brodie Grundy, it looks to have far more dangerous players than the Swans can cover. If Grundy gets on top of Callum Sinclair, he'll be a match-winner.

The stat: Collingwood faced a serious challenge from St Kilda last week but showed it was a class above the Saints in the final term. The Pies kicked 6.6 to one goal in the last quarter to show just how powerful they can be.

The match-up: Callum Sinclair v Brodie Grundy

The Swan hasn't been able to match his 2018 form this year but has improved his output in the past month, and he'll need to be at his very best to match Grundy around the ground and at stoppages. If the big Magpie imposes himself physically on the contest his fleet of gun onballers will destroy the home side.

It’s a big week for: George Hewett

The Swans midfielder won 20 contested possessions and nine clearances against North Melbourne last week and is more than just a stopper these days. Hewett will get another huge job on Friday night on Scott Pendlebury, Dayne Beams or Adam Treloar, or could even be thrown onto the wing to try to curb the influence of Steele Sidebottom.

Big call: Inspired by his brother Ben's return to senior footy with Collingwood, Swan Sam Reid will emerge from his form slump to boot six goals for the home side, while Ben will boot four.

Prediction: Collingwood by 28 points

Match preview: Sydney v Essendon

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round 19, 2018: Essendon 15.19 (109) defeated Sydney 10.6 (66)

The home side overcame some poor finishing to run away with the game thanks to four unanswered goals in the last term. Key defender Michael Hurley's shutdown job on Sydney superstar Lance Franklin earned him three Brownlow medal votes, while captain Dyson Heppell was superb with 31 possessions.

What it means for Sydney: The season. With just one win from their first seven games the Swans are bottom of the ladder, but incredibly, the close nature of the competition leaves them just three wins off fifth spot. This is their last chance.

What it means for Essendon: The Bombers' three wins have come against Melbourne, Brisbane and North Melbourne, but they've faltered against the Giants, St Kilda, Collingwood and Geelong. If they are to be finals contenders, they can't lose to the cellar dwellers.

How Sydney wins: The Swans defence has been under enormous pressure this season, so the midfield must make a stand and get its hands on the footy against Essendon. Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker, Zak Jones and Isaac Heeney have to give the side control of the game.

How Essendon wins: If the Bombers can get enough forward entries, Joe Daniher and Jake Stringer will prove a handful. They're both dynamic athletes and can give the undermanned Sydney defence plenty of problems.

The stat: The Swans gave up 77 inside-50s against Brisbane last week and only lost by 22 points. If they allow the Bombers that many chances on Friday night, it will be a rout at the SCG.

The match-up: George Hewett v Dylan Shiel

The Swans stopper is familiar with the former Giants midfielder and could get the job of trying to curtail his explosive talents on Friday night. Leg speed can hurt Sydney through the middle of the ground and Shiel has burnt them before.

It's a big week for: Joe Daniher

The star forward couldn't back up his Anzac Day exploits and managed just one goal from four kicks against Geelong last week. With Dane Rampe his likely opponent it will be a tough night for the Bomber, but if he can break free he could be a matchwinner.

Big call: Hewett will put the clamps on Shiel and not only hold him under 25 possessions for the first time this year, the Essendon star won't manage more than 20.

Prediction: Essendon by 19 points

Match preview: Adelaide v Fremantle

Last time they met: Optus Stadium, round 12, 2018. Fremantle 10.11 (71) defated Adelaide 9.14 (68).

Trailing by 12 points at half-time, the Dockers kicked four unanswered goals in the third quarter before holding the fast-finishing Crows at bay in the final term. Emerging forward Brennan Cox was the hero for the Dockers with four goals.

What it means for Adelaide: The Crows (ninth, 3-3) have the chance to move inside the top eight for the first time this season coming off back-to-back wins against Gold Coast and St Kilda.

What it means for Fremantle: The Dockers (second, 4-2) can consolidate their spot near the top of the ladder. They've shown they can secure big scalps on the road having knocked off Greater Western Sydney in Canberra in round five.

How Adelaide wins: The Crows must gain the upper hand in contested footy and clearances. They had a significant edge in both of those areas in their win against St Kilda last weekend, finishing +21 in contested possessions and +12 in clearances.

How Fremantle wins: Lots of overlap run on the outside, move the ball quickly and expose the lack of leg speed in the Crows' midfield.

The stat: The Dockers have a solid recent record against the Crows – with seven wins from their past 14 games – but their Adelaide Oval form is horrible. The Dockers have lost their last five trips to the venue against the Crows and Port Adelaide, with an averaging losing margin of 68 points. Their only win came against the Crows in round nine, 2015.

The match-up: Rory Sloane v Nat Fyfe

The two most talented players on the ground will be going hammer and tong at each other – although they both might be tagged by other players – at the all-important centre clearances and around the ground. Sloane is ranked 21st in the Official AFL Player Ratings, while Fyfe is ranked fifth.

It’s a big week for: Alex Pearce

The Dockers defender will likely get the job on Crows co-captain Taylor Walker, who burst back to form with four goals against St Kilda last week. Pearce has been outstanding this season and is the rock of the Dockers' backline.

Big call: Crows midfielders Brad and Matt Crouch run riot with 40 or more disposals each.

Prediction: Adelaide by 14 points

Match preview: Geelong v Essendon

Last time they met: MCG, round nine, 2018: Essendon 12.12 (84) defeated Geelong 7.8 (50)

The Bombers entered the contest in terrible form and surprised the Cats, with coach Chris Scott admitting afterwards the club had a "very bad day". Shaun McKernan starred in a blistering opening term while Zach Merrett and Cale Hooker impressed.

What it means for Geelong: Maintaining breathing room on top of the ladder. The Cats enter round seven a game ahead of second-placed Fremantle and keeping that buffer will help in their aim for a top-four finish.

What it means for Essendon: Another chance to establish legitimacy. While John Worsfold's men won admirers for fighting back against heavyweights Collingwood on Anzac Day, it's hard to shake the memory of their deplorable opening fortnight. Beating Geelong would help rectify that.

How Geelong wins: Keep up the manic forward pressure, led by recruits Gary Rohan and Luke Dahlhaus, and stop Essendon's fleet of rebounding backmen from starting those electric chains of ball movement.

How Essendon wins: Going up against a powerful midfield unit that is No.1 in the competition for contested possession differential, Dylan Shiel, Dyson Heppell and Zach Merrett will have to be at their best.

The stat: This clash features first and second on the list of most inside 50s this season. Patrick Dangerfield has 43 through his six games, while Shiel is on 40.

The match-up: Gary Ablett v Adam Saad

Possessing pace to burn, Saad, ranked No.102 in the AFL Player Ratings, can defend well and potentially hurt Ablett going the other way, although that tactic didn't work for Hawthorn when it sent Jack Gunston to the dual Brownlow medallist on Easter Monday. Ablett is No.49 in the Player Ratings.

It's a big week for: Mark Blicavs

Coming up against such a dangerous opposition, with Joe Daniher and Jake Stringer surrounded by Orazio Fantasia and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, the in-form defender will need to be on guard to keep a tight rein on the Bombers.

Big call: A surprisingly wide-open match, with the ball bouncing around at a rapid pace and both sides cracking the ton.

Prediction: Essendon by 13 points

Match preview: Carlton v North Melbourne

Last time they met: Blundstone Arena, round four, 2018: North Melbourne 18.8 (116) defeated Carlton 4.6 (30)

This one was virtually over as soon as it started. The Roos controlled the match from the get-go in Hobart, with Ben Brown kicking five majors on their way to an 86-point win. Shaun Higgins racked up 35 touches.

What it means for Carlton: After yet another 'honourable loss' last weekend, the Blues again must keep their focus simple: It's all about getting over the line for Carlton.

What it means for North Melbourne: The Roos' season is hanging by a thread. After an improved performance against the Power, this could be their last chance to salvage something from 2019.

How Carlton wins: By taking its chances. Having thrown away a 36-point lead against Hawthorn, Carlton knows it has the cattle to win on Sunday. A more consistent effort over four quarters should be enough.

How North Melbourne wins: By re-finding its mojo. Rewind back to last year and North Melbourne produced an emphatic performance to beat Carlton. That type of footy will again secure the points on Sunday.

The stat: Don't expect a close game. Three of the last four meetings between Carlton and North Melbourne have been decided by more than 10 goals.

The match-up: Harry McKay v Robbie Tarrant

McKay remains one of the game's most in-form key forwards, clunking another six marks and kicking two goals on Sunday. The task of stopping him fall at the feet of Tarrant and doing so could prove crucial to North Melbourne's chances.

It's a big week for: Ben Brown (North Melbourne)

Having already come in for some criticism this season, Brown was held goalless for the first time this year on Friday night. He was easily best on ground the last time these two sides met and will be hoping to rectify his form slump on Sunday.

Big call: Brown stutters again, but Roos still prove too good

Prediction: North Melbourne by 11 points

West Coast Eagles vs Gold Coast Suns Tips, Odds and Teams – AFL 2019

We take a look at Saturday’s (04/5/2019) AFL Week 7 match which is between the West Coast Eagles and Gold Coast Suns. View the odds and teams for both sides as well as our Tips and Bets for the match.

Preview:

It’s only fitting two sides on the heels of two straight losses meet this weekend in Perth.

After a thrilling start to the season the Suns have looked a little underdone in recent weeks losing in back-to-back blowout fashion at the hands of the Crows and the Lions.

Likewise, the reigning premiers have also been on the wrong end of the scoreboard falling to the Power at home and the Cats last week in Geelong.

A trip to Optus Stadium is the last thing Stuart Dew’s side needs right now, especially considering the Suns are yet to win a game against West Coast in Perth.

The biggest problem for the Eagles of late has been the midfield. West Coast gave up 444 disposals to the Cats last week, and have shown little ability to win the hard, contested footy.

Despite what the scoreboard reads, the Suns were in the contest last week against the Lions – at least up until halftime. Gold Coast weren’t disgraced on the stat sheet, they simply couldn’t find any sort of freedom inside 50 managing only 17 shots at goal.

In their eight-year history, the Suns have won only once against West Coast back in 2017. This game is hardly worth overthinking, but with such little value on offer head-to-head and a large line set, it’s probably one to leave out of your multi.

What it means for West Coast: The Eagles are a shadow of last year's premiership team and desperately need some confidence – as individuals and in their system – after losing 10 of their past 11 quarters to Fremantle, Port Adelaide and Geelong.

What it means for Gold Coast: Everyone expected the Suns to struggle this year and, after a 3-1 start, two beltings from the Crows and Lions appear to be a sign of things to come. Beating the Eagles in Perth would be a huge upset and restore faith they won't become easybeats as the season drags on.

How West Coast wins: If they are anywhere near their best, the Eagles will have far too much class for the Suns. This is about the way they play. West Coast's desire and workrate is under the microscope and, even if they win, anything less than a ferocious effort will raise more questions.

How Gold Coast wins: West Coast's midfield has been smashed in consecutive weeks and if the Suns can bring a hard edge to the contest they could make it tough for the Eagles to score.

The stat: The Eagles have beaten the Suns by an average of 59 points in all seven clashes in Perth. Gold Coast's only win over West Coast was by three points in 2017, and the clubs drew at Metricon Stadium in 2015.

The match-up: Tom Hickey v Jarrod Witts

Hickey was one of few Eagles who could hold their head high after the belting from Geelong. Despite copping a midfield hammering, the Eagles won the clearances 43-39, with Hickey extracting a dozen alone. West Coast's onball brigade is underperforming and if Witts can kick-start the Suns it will go a long way to an upset.

It's a big week for: Jack Darling

You could name about half West Coast's team who need to step up but Darling is copping the brunt of fan fury. Putting aside the fact he has gone scoreless in consecutive full games for the first time since his debut season in 2011, the key forward has had minimal impact over the past month and needs to lift his intensity.

Western Bulldogs vs Richmond Tigers Tips, Odds and Teams – AFL 2019 Week 7

We take a look at Saturday nights (4/5/2019) AFL Week 7 match which is between the Western Bulldogs and the Richmond Tigers. View the odds and teams for both sides as well as our Tips and Bets for the match.

Preview:

If Saturday’s game turns out anything like last year’s Round 23 thriller, we should be in for a real treat.

The Tigers survived a scare last year against the Dogs to win by three-points, but if recent form is anything to go by, Richmond should have no trouble laying on the hurt against Luke Beveridge’s side this time around.

Richmond stormed home to yet another Anzac Eve victory last week winning by 43-points. The good news is Jason Castagna booted three goals, which became even more meaningful on Saturday after the club announced Jack Riewoldt will miss eight weeks with a PCL injury.

The Dogs escaped Perth unscathed last week, but they failed to secure three points against Fremantle. To their credit, the Doggies fought back to lead midway through the third quarter, but that wasn’t enough to stop David Mundy who booted a pair of goals in his 300th game.

The last three encounters between these two sides have been decided by 10-points or less, but it’s tough to imagine the Dogs mustering up a fight this week. The red and blue lead the league in behinds, a similar story to last year, and even without Riewoldt on the field, the Tigers should still be able to dominate the inside 50’s.

What it means for the Western Bulldogs: Four losses in a row have the Dogs languishing two wins behind the eighth-placed Tigers. It's too early to say season-defining, but it's getting nearer that point.

What it means for Richmond: A spate of key injuries and two big defeats to Collingwood and GWS had the warning lights flashing. Three straight wins since then, led by Shane Edwards, Dylan Grimes and co., has shown the Tigers' maturity. They can't afford to drop these games in a log-jammed top eight.

How the Western Bulldogs win: The Bulldogs are 18th for goalkicking accuracy and have kicked more goals than behinds only once in 2019. If they clean up that vital part of the equation their contested work has them more than in the game.

How Richmond wins: Build the brick wall at half-back like they did against the Dees. Nick Vlastuin and Bachar Houli controlled proceedings and the tap-on Tigers kept the ball moving for the mosquito fleet up forward.

Match preview: Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions, Round 7, 2019

News, Sydney Swans, Match Preview, Swans News, Matches and Team News, Season, George Hewett, Callum Sinclair, Luke Parker, Callum Mills, Aliir Aliir
The Swans and Lions find themselves in familiar territory on Saturday afternoon, when the Swans travel north with their season in tatters.

Just like they did in Round 7, 2017, the Swans desperately need a win to keep their season alive, their 1-5 start leaving coach John Longmire considering the dreaded 'R'

That day, the Swans kick-started their season with a convincing 54-point win, devastating the Lions with their best first quarter of the season up to that point, booting 7 majors.

Lance Franklin was back to his unstoppable best, kicking 8-goals and picking up the 3 Brownlow votes, while Zak Jones (27 disposals, 6 clearances) and Luke Parker (30 disposals) were the next best.

The Lions had no answers, with a pre-game and half-time scrap doing little to slow the Swans' momentum.

The Swans have enjoyed a decade of supremacy over the Lions, winning their last 11 matches since Round 22, 2009.

Narrow wins in 2016 and 2018 gave the Lions hope of a turn-around, but it looks as though this year may well be their best chance yet.

Both sides find themselves at opposite ends of the ladder, with Luke Hodge and Chris Fagan turning the luckless Lions into serious finals contenders.

Victory against Premiers West Coast in the opening round, and a brilliant comeback win against Port Adelaide in Round 3, announced their return to the AFL's elite, temporarily jumping into the top 4.

After their tremendous start, consecutive disappointing losses brought their season to a temporary halt.

Essendon won their first game of the season, while Grand Finalists Collingwood heaped more misery on a Lions outfit playing more 2017 than 2019.

A return to the winning sheet against Queensland rivals, the Gold Coast Suns, got the ball moving once again.

Scoring hasn't been an issue for the Lions, kicking 100 or more points in each of their four wins, while the Swans haven't scored more 100 or more points since Round 17, 2018.

Geelong castaway Lincoln McCarthy has been a revelation for the Lions, booting 10-goals, while Eric Hipwood showed his future potential with 6-goals against Port Adelaide in Round 3.

Hugh McCluggage, Daniel McStay, small forward Charlie Cameron and second-year player Cam Rayner have kicked bags, adding dynamism and speed to an unpredictable and hard to match-up on forward line.

Lance Franklin is a huge out for the Swans, joining veterans Heath Grundy, Jarrad McVeigh, Nick Smith and Kieren Jack on the sidelines, while the Lions will have to make do without their key defender Harris Andrews.

20 debutants in the last three seasons all but confirms what many in the media think about the Swans - they're rebuilding.

A win for the Swans gives them - and their fans - hope of a turnaround, and chance to play finals, while a win for the Lions cements their place in the top 8.

LAST FIVE MEETINGS:
R10, 2018, Sydney Swans 10.7 (67) d Brisbane Lions 6.13 (49)
R7, 2017, Sydney Swans 20.15 (135) d Brisbane Lions 12.9 (81)
R6, 2016, Sydney Swans 15.7 (97) d Brisbane Lions 14.10 (94)
R15, 2015, Sydney Swans 10.10 (70) d Brisbane Lions 7.7 (49)
R7, 2014, Sydney Swans 18.15 (123) d Brisbane Lions 6.8 (44)

KEY MATCHUPS:

Callum Mills vs Cam Rayner
Cam Rayner has had a stand-out start to his second season of AFL football, booting 10-goals from his first 6 games. Playing at full forward against the Suns, he was a hand-full for Ballard and Stanley, booting 3 goals. Callum Mills hasn't had the greatest start this year, struggling as the number one small-forward stopper.

Callum Sinclair vs Stefan Martin
Despite averaging less than his career average in hit-outs, Stefan Martin is revelling in shared ruck duties with Oscar McInerney this season. His impact around the ground is as good as it has ever been, while Swans ruckman Callum Sinclair has been smashed in two of his last three matches.

Luke Parker vs Mitch Robinson
In a battle of the bulls, both were at their best last weekend, with Robinson in the Brownlow mix - not for the first time this season. When Parker is on, he's almost impossible to stop, and will need to be at his best to help the Swans midfield.

George Hewett vs Lachie Neale
In one of the trades of the season, Lachie Neale has elevated the Lions' midfield to new heights, and has become one of the dominant players of the competition. Averaging more than 33 disposals, 4 tackles and 8 clearances per game, he's taken the competitive Lions into finals territory. Hewett will have the hardest match-up of his growing career on Saturday.

Aliir Aliir vs Eric Hipwood
There's really only one match-up the Swans have for the supremely athletic centre-half forward, and that's the equally athletic and exciting Aliir Aliir. Aliir has been one of the better players for the Swans' this year, while Eric Hipwood's 6-goal haul against Port Adelaide announced him on the big stage.

THE SIX POINTS:

1: Records are meant to be broken. Sydney's dominant win-streak over Brisbane is the last they hold in the AFL. Both teams' finding themselves at opposite ends of the ladder, a win gives the Swans hope, while for Brisbane, it gives credence to their awesome start to 2019.

2: Lachie Neale's brilliant start to 2019 has him firmly in Brownlow contention and has seen him jump to a career-high seventh on AFL Player Ratings. Lance Franklin is the top-ranked Swan at thirteenth.

3: The Gabba holds no fears for the Swans, winning 9 of their last 11 games at the venue. The last time the Lions beat the Swans at their home ground was Round 3, 2009, with the previous win coming in Round 1, 2004.

4: The match will be decided in the midfield contest, with the Lions the 4th ranked clearance team, with 39.5 per game. The Swans are ranked 11th with 36.2 per game.

5: The Swans have not only struggled to score, but move the ball inside their forward 50 as well, ranked 15th in the league with 49.5 inside 50's per game, and have conceded 20 or more inside 50's twice this season - both were away game losses. The Lions have had no such problems, ranked 6th for inside 50s.

6: The Lions are ranked third for Goals this season with 80, while the Swans are ranked thirteenth with 64. Lance Franklin who misses through injury, is the Swans' leading goal kicker with 11.

IT’S A BIG WEEK FOR…
Lachie Neale has been in red-hot form, topping the league for disposals (207) and handballs (132), while ranked top 5 for centre clearances (17), contested possessions (106), effective disposals (166), ground-ball gets (71), inside 50s (36) and total clearances (48). Sydney's No. 1 stopper George Hewett is going to need all the help he can get from his teammates to apply the clamps on the diminutive elite midfielder.

Match preview: Melbourne v Hawthorn

Last time they met: MCG, semi-final, 2018: Melbourne 16.8 (104) defeated Hawthorn 10.11 (71)

Melbourne won its way through to its first preliminary final in 18 years after a convincing 33-point win over Hawthorn in front of 90,152 fans. Tom McDonald kicked four goals and Jack Viney gathered 27 disposals in a commanding midfield display.

What it means for Melbourne: Melbourne's finals hopes are hanging by a thread after a disastrous start to the season leaves it with a 1-5 win-loss record. Winning is a must to keep its faint September dreams alive.

What it means for Hawthorn: After a narrow win over Carlton, Hawthorn is sitting with five other sides at 3-3 and needs to maintain the rage to keep pace with the top eight. The Hawks are going through a readjustment period.

How Melbourne wins: The Demons made some strides in the way they defended against the Tigers but connecting forward of centre was still a major issue. If Melbourne can put pressure on Hawthorn's developing defence and start converting opportunities from their entries, then they will be in business.

How Hawthorn wins: Limit Melbourne's possessions and control the football. Spread the ball and make the ground big, moving the ball with speed. The Hawks also need to give their forwards one-on-one opportunities against their opponents, an area in which Melbourne has been susceptible in this year.

The stat: Hawthorn has won 15 of the last 17 matches played against Melbourne.

The match-up: James Harmes v Jaeger O'Meara

Harmes is the man to go to O'Meara in a run-with role with the star Hawk in exceptional form. The Demons midfielder ranks 97th overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings and has failed to recapture the form that saw him finish third in last year's best and fairest. O'Meara is playing well above his rating (190th in the AFL).

It's a big week for: Clayton Oliver

With Jack Viney set to miss the next fortnight, Melbourne will need a big performance from its other star midfielder. Oliver has been statistically very good this season, averaging 32 disposals and more than seven clearances a game. But the Demons need him to increase his impact on games and on the scoreboard – he hasn't kicked a goal this season – if they are to defeat the Hawks.

Big call: Jack Gunston to turn around a slow start to the season and kick four goals against a Melbourne defence that has conceded an AFL-high 100.2 points per game this season.

Prediction: Hawks by 16 points

AFL Preview: Giants v Saints

Inaccuracy cost the Saints on the road when they kicked 1.6 in the opening quarter and had 3.10 on the board at half-time. At the other end the Giants' forward line clicked with Harry Himmelberg leading the way with four, while Lachie Whitfield's 32 possessions earned him three Brownlow votes.

What it means for GWS: The Giants got back on track against the Swans last week and must maintain their intensity around the footy to hold onto fourth spot on the ladder. They'll want to re-establish themselves in Canberra after a disappointing outing a fortnight ago against Fremantle.

What it means for St Kilda: A win over the Giants in Canberra would give the Saints another big scalp of the year and go a long way towards silencing the doubters who don't yet rate them as finals contenders.

How GWS wins: With weapons of all shapes and sizes inside 50, the Giants forward line has been hard to contain this year, and with Toby Greene back from injury, it's even more imposing for the Saints.

How St Kilda wins: Midfield speed and quick ball movement can hurt GWS at times and the Saints have plenty of speedy onballers who will enjoy the deck in Canberra.

The stat: St Kilda racked up 60 inside-50s against the Giants (48) in their loss last year but wasted their opportunities in front of goal, which cost them the match. They must grab their chances this week.

The match-up: Nick Haynes v Matthew Parker

Haynes took 12 marks against the Swans last week and continually chopped off their kicks inside 50, but if he gets Parker as an opponent he'll need to keep his eyes on the West Australian. The mature-age recruit from South Fremantle has a prodigious leap and doesn't need many possessions to hurt the opposition on the scoreboard.

Whoever he gets, Jack Steele will be a busy man against the Giants.

t's a big week for: Jack Steele

The Canberra boy and ex-Giant has done some tagging against GWS before and can take his pick of former teammates to run with this week. Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly and Lachie Whitfield are all in outstanding touch this season, so whoever he gets it will be a massive task.

Cronulla Sharks

The Sharks have won just three games this season and are struggling significantly with injuries to key players. They will be after a win at home after losing by 23 points to the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium last weekend.

Melbourne Storm

Melbourne have been the team to beat so far in 2019, losing just one game so far this season. They lost their first game of the season to the Roosters by just one point in round six, a week before a lucky one-point comeback against the Warriors.

SQUAD NEWS

HEAD TO HEAD
The Sharks will host the Melbourne Storm at PointsBet Stadium on Friday night, desperate for a win despite their injury toll. In the last 15 games Cronulla and Melbourne have played together, Cronulla has won six. The last time these two met was in a 2018 grand final qualifier, where Melbourne won by 16 points, sending them to the grand final. The Storm has won all but one game this year, while Cronulla has won just three. It is often quite an entertaining match when these two sides play, and there is no doubt it will be the same Friday night at PointsBet Stadium.

KEY BATTLE
The game between the Sharks and the Storm will be entertaining, and a great match-up overall. A key battle, in particular, is between the hookers; Cameron Smith and Jayden Brailey.

23-year-old Brailey made his NRL debut in 2017, while Smith made his in 2002. It will be an interesting battle between the two due to the differences in experience. Smith is known for being one of the best in the NRL, while Brailey is just beginning his career.

Both are smart, talented players who are invaluable to their respective clubs. Brailey is an exciting young player who is still learning his trade, while Smith is a senior player with a lot of experience.

2019 NRL –  Gold Coast Titans Preview & Prediction vs North Queensland Cowboys

THE TEAM NEWS

NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS

Head Coach: Paul Green

Starting 13: Kahu, O’Neill, Opacic, Tuala, Hampton, Clifford, Morgan, Scott, Granville, McLean, Cooper, McGuire, Asiata – Interchanges: Baptiste, Hess, Bolton, Molo – Reserves: Jensen, Dunn, Taumalolo, Gela-Mosby

Unavailable: Kyle Feldt, Murray Taulagi, Nene Macdonald, Te Maire Martin

North Queensland failed to build on their win over New Zealand Warriors as they suffered a disappointing defeat to Canterbury but will hope to bounce back as they host another struggling side in Gold Coast.

Te Maire Martin has been ruled out indefinitely after it was discovered he had been suffering from a bleed on the brain and has been replaced in the fullback role by Jordan Kahu with Tom Opacic coming in at centre.

Jason Taumalolo remained on the sidelines for the Cowboys having been named amongst the reserves last week but could return here if he can prove his fitness on game day having been named as a reserve again.

GOLD COAST TITANS

Head Coach: Garth Brennan

Starting 13: Gordon, Don, Peachey, Kelly, Sami, Roberts, Taylor, Wallace, Rein, Boyd, Proctor, Cartwright, Arrow – Interchanges: Brimson, Fotuaika, Hipgrave, King – Reserves: Stockwell, Whitbread, Stockwell, Matthews, Arthars

Unavailable: Nathan Peats, Ryan James, Dale Copley

Gold Coast's two-match winning streak was brought to an end after some poor defence saw them blow a 14-point lead against Wests Tigers with the Titans missing 30 tackles in the match.

Dale Copley suffered a leg injury during the defeat to the Tigers and has been ruled out with Phillip Sami taking his place on the wing whilst AJ Brimson comes onto the bench as the utility having recovered from an injury of his own.

Maroons hopeful Jarrod Wallace is also back in the side after he completed his suspension with Moeaki Fotuaika dropping to the bench whilst Jai Whitbread and Jack Stockwell both lost their places in the 17.

THE PREDICTION

North Queensland put in a poor performance as they failed to build on their win last week as they suffered a disappointing loss to Canterbury. Gold Coast also suffered a defeat at the hands of Wests Tigers despite leading 0-14 with both teams very much struggling so far this season. This game could go either way and with the Cowboys having to name Jordan Kahu at fullback in the absence of Te Maire Martin, that upheaval could be enough for the Titans to edge a tight contest.

Match preview: Port Adelaide vs Collingwood

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Friday May 3, 7.50pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 22, 2018: Collingwood 17.13 (115) defeated Port Adelaide 10.4 (64)

The Magpies cemented their first finals berth in four years while the Power slipped outside the eight and ultimately missed the finals. After leading by just four points midway through the third term, the Pies piled on 8.5 to 1.0 to break a four-game losing streak against Port.

What it means for Collingwood: In the first of just three appearances at Marvel Stadium this season, the Pies will fancy their chances of posting their fourth successive win in a period in which they could build serious momentum.

What it means for Port Adelaide: On a fast track under the roof, Ken Hinkley's boys have a golden opportunity to strengthen their credentials against one of the flag favourites.

How Collingwood wins: Jamie Elliott's return will allow the Pies to assemble their full complement of forwards for the first time and possibly enable superstar Jordan De Goey to spend more time in the midfield, where his explosiveness could be critical.

How Port Adelaide wins: The Power have unleashed some exciting speedsters – among them the supremely talented Connor Rozee and fellow NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Xavier Duursma – who have the ability to unsettle the Magpies' team defence.

The stat: The Power have never beaten Collingwood at Marvel Stadium, losing their previous four games at the venue to the Pies by an average of 43 points. The teams haven't met there since 2012.

The match-up: Brodie Grundy v Scott Lycett and Paddy Ryder

It all starts at the source, and Power pair Lycett (ranked No.94 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) and Ryder (No.22) will look to nullify the AFL's premier ruckman Grundy (No.4), just as Lycett and Nathan Vardy did in West Coast's Grand Final triumph seven months ago.

It’s a big week for: Tom Rockliff

The prolific onballer amassed 43 touches in Brisbane's win over the Pies at the MCG in round 21, 2014, but in his two games against them since then, both at the MCG, he has managed just 18 (after being injured in the third quarter in his first game as Lions' captain in round one, 2015) and 17 in Port's round 22 loss last year.

Big call: Port comes agonisingly close to toppling both 2018 Grand Finalists

Prediction: Magpies by 10 points

Flag frontrunners West Coast and Geelong primed for finals preview

Western Bulldogs great Brad Johnson has labelled today’s clash between Geelong and West Coast a potential forerunner to another showdown in September.

The Eagles and Cats, adversaries in the 1992 and 1994 grand finals, have met just once in a final since then.

Johnson, who will be part of Fox Footy’s commentary team at GMHBA Stadium, said the Eagles’ shock Good Friday capitulation to Port Adelaide had not shaken his faith in the reigning premiers.

The 364-game legend expected both West Coast and Geelong to be competing for the flag at the pointy end of the season.

“I think so, and I think that’s what the competition sees, no question,” Johnson said.

“It’s going to be a high-class, quality game of footy. West Coast obviously coming off last week and wanting to respond after Port Adelaide took control of them.

“The Cats losing to GWS at home (in round four) – they don’t want to lose two in a row at the Cattery.

“It’s going to be a great battle for the West Coast forwards versus Geelong’s backs, who are known as the misfits and they’re getting the job done at the moment.”

Geelong tightened to $1.36 favourites yesterday, with West Coast drifting to $3.10 outsiders with TABtouch. The teams are second and third in flag betting behind premiership favourite Collingwood.

The Eagles rank last in the AFL for contested possession and inside 50s this season. Johnson, who tipped the Cats to win a close contest, expected the Eagles’ midfielders to hit back hard after lowering their colours against the Power.

“They’ve got class in the midfield and these guys are big-game, proud performers. So if they’re quiet one week, then the mental resolve would be to stand out the following week and have a real drive,” Johnson said.

“So I’m sure West Coast will have that with their mids.”

Dom Sheed, whose output has decreased since stints in the forward-line arising due to Andrew Gaff’s return from suspension, is set to play more midfield minutes given the loss of Jack Redden to injury.

Exciting 195cm youngster Jarrod Brander, West Coast’s top pick in the 2017 national draft, has been recalled for his third game and is set to be unleashed on a wing at times after impressing in the WAFL.

Johnson said Brownlow medallist Patrick Dangerfield was the man Eagles tagger Mark Hutchings should start on.

“The most important player in terms of Geelong’s midfield I still think is Paddy Dangerfield,” he said.

“Whether you can actually stop him and restrict his influence is the biggest challenge for any opposition team.

“Because if he’s quieter in the midfield he can go forward and play that role, especially if the midfield tagger goes with him for a period of time.”

Match preview: Carlton vs Hawthorn

Where and when: University of Tasmania Stadium, Sunday April 28, 3.20pm AEST

Last time they met: Etihad Stadium, round 18, 2018: Carlton 7.10 (52) lost to Hawthorn 18.16 (124)

The Hawks held the Blues to just one goal in the first half on their way to a thumping 72-point win late in the season. Tom Mitchell was the standout with 46 disposals and two goals, while smalls Luke Bruest and Paul Puopolo combined for nine majors between them.

What it means for Hawthorn: On paper, this should be routine for the Hawks. But their indifferent form means nothing can be ruled out down in Tasmania. Victory on Sunday should be a settler in an unpredictable season.

What it means for Carlton: After its first victory of the season last week, Carlton will hope to replicate what St Kilda has done this year and build upon that confidence. Victory here could get the Blues on a roll.

How Hawthorn wins: By exploiting Carlton's mid-sized defenders. If players such as Breust and Puopolo can find form, as they did last season, it could spell trouble for the Blues.

How Carlton wins: By doing exactly what it did against the Dogs. Win the ball out of the midfield, control the tempo of the game and let its key forwards get to work inside 50.

The stat: Hawthorn has won 15 of its last 16 encounters against Carlton. Remarkably, seven of those have been won by more than 50 points and two have been won by triple-digit margins.

The match-up: Jaeger O'Meara v Patrick Cripps

Cripps is the game's best inside midfielder at the moment, with Carlton's onball brigade delivering in its first victory of the season last week. Hawthorn's midfield has had its issues this season, so O'Meara will prove key to thwarting the Blues' work out of the centre.

It's a big week for: Harry McKay

McKay continues to lead the League for contested marks, but he must find consistency in front of goal. After his bag of four majors against the Dogs last week lifted the Blues to victory, he'll be hoping for another haul against the Hawks on Sunday.

Big call: Breust tears Blues backline to shreds in Tassie triumph

Prediction: Hawthorn by 21 points

Match preview: North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide

Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Friday, April 26, 7.20pm (ACST)

Last time they met: Marvel Stadium, round six, 2018. Port Adelaide 15.12 (102) defeated North Melbourne 10.9 (69).

Small forward Sam Gray booted four goals and key defender Tom Jonas did a great defensive job on Ben Brown as the Power beat the Kangaroos by 33 points. Wingman Jared Polec (now with North) was influential for the Power, with a game-high 34 disposals and 12 tackles.

What it means for Port Adelaide: The Power can build on their sensational win against reigning premiers West Coast in Perth on Good Friday. With a 4-2 start, the Power would be set up nicely for the season.

What it means for North Melbourne: The Kangaroos will be desperate to get off the bottom of the ladder. It's been a shocking start to the season, hitting a new low with last weekend's 58-point loss to Essendon.

How Port Adelaide wins: The Power's gameplan is built around frenetic ball movement, taking the game on and playing high-risk, high-reward football. It doesn't come off all the time, but when it does, it's hard to stop.

How North Melbourne wins: It's all about contested ball for the Kangaroos. Their midfielders have to establish themselves on the inside and give their outside runners like Polec and Aaron Hall a chance to hit up their forwards on the lead.

The stat: The Power have won their past four games against the Kangaroos by an average margin of 34 points. North Melbourne's last win over Port Adelaide was in round three, 2014.

The match-up: Tom Jonas v Ben Brown

Jonas did an outstanding job on Brown in the corresponding fixture last year. Brown kicked four goals, but two of those came when the sting was out of the game. Brown is the eighth-ranked key forward in the Official AFL Player Ratings, and 98th overall, up against Jonas, who is the 14th-ranked small/medium defender, and 133th overall.

It’s a big week for: Jared Polec

The Kangaroos wingman faced the Power in the JLT Community Series, but there will still be plenty of feeling in his first home and away game against his former club. Polec,  who joined the Kangaroos on a lucrative five-year deal, has been one of their shining lights in a tough start to the season.

Big call: Robbie Gray kicks five goals and has 20 disposals in a best-on-ground performance.

Prediction: Port Adelaide by 32 points
